The summary

Pumps from 5,500 to 16,000 L/h for large aquaponic systems and ponds

When an aquaponic system exceeds a few cubic metres, or when the delivery head to a filter or grow beds exceeds 3 m, a small pump no longer delivers the flow required. The Sicce Syncra ADV takes over from the Syncra Silent: the same Italian design, but a flow of 5,500 to 10,000 L/h and a maximum head of 3.5 to 7 m depending on the model. You can place it at the bottom of the tank or pond, or install it out of the water, in line on the circuit, below the water level. For larger volumes, the Syncra HF 16.0 extends the range up to 16,000 L/h.

🛡️ Three built-in protections

The Syncra ADV's electronic circuit provides 3 levels of protection. The pump switches itself off if the rotor jams, for example on a pebble or a root, after a series of restart attempts. It also stops in the event of dry running, when the level drops below the intake, and in the event of overheating. The ceramic shaft and rear bearing resist wear, and the pre-chamber, which can be rotated through 360°, draws in water all the way round, which limits clogging. The intake grille fits underneath or on top, depending on whether you place the pump on the bottom or suspend it.

Below the water level, never dry

The Syncra ADV works submerged or out of the water, but it is not self-priming. Placed out of the water, it must therefore stay lower than the pond surface, so that water reaches it by itself, and its motor must never run dry: damage caused by dry running is not covered by the warranty. Submerged, it stays entirely under water, and you check the level after heavy evaporation. Always unplug the pump before taking it out of the water.

📐 Choosing the right model

The stated flow rate is measured at zero head, and it falls as the delivery head increases, until it drops to nothing at the maximum head. So work out the real height between the water level and the outlet, add about 1 m for the bends and the length of pipe, then choose a model whose maximum head exceeds this total by at least a third. Take a 5 m³ system to be turned over once an hour, with a filter positioned 1.5 m higher: the head to overcome is about 2.5 m, and the ADV 10.0 still delivers about 6,400 L/h at this height, whereas the ADV 9.0 delivers only about 4,200.

ADV 5.5

It delivers 5,500 L/h up to 3.5 m for 40 W, and suits a 10 m³ pond or a medium-sized system.

ADV 7.0

With 7,000 L/h, 5 m maximum height and 55 W, it serves setups where the water has to be pushed higher.

ADV 9.0 and 10.0

Both consume 90 W: the 9.0 delivers 9,500 L/h up to 4.5 m, the 10.0 delivers 10,000 L/h up to 7 m.

HF 16.0

It delivers 16,000 L/h up to 4.5 m for 175 W, and serves a very large pond.

A 25 mm pipe for the ADV connectors

The connectors supplied with the ADV models take a pipe with an internal diameter of 25 or 32 mm. The EHEIM 25/34 mm pipe, sold by the metre, can be cut to the exact length of your circuit, which avoids surplus lengths that restrict the flow. Flexible and phenol-free, it suits both the fish tank of an aquaponic system and a pond circuit.

On the ADV models, the outlet is a 1" 3/8 thread with fittings for 25 or 32 mm pipe. Keep the largest possible diameter along the whole length, because a pipe that is too narrow adds head loss that reduces the flow, just as extra height would. Also avoid tight bends, and prefer two wide bends to a right angle, particularly on the intake of a pump placed out of the water. The 3 m cable lets you reach a socket located at the edge of the pond, protected by a 30 mA residual current device.

For maintenance, unplug the pump and lift it out of the water, open the pre-chamber by pulling the locking ring, then remove the rotor and wash the whole assembly under running water with a brush. Limescale deposited in the rotor housing dissolves in a mixture of water and vinegar, never with a detergent, which would pollute the water. Handle the rotor with care: its magnet pulls strongly on the shaft, and a knock against the rear ceramic bearing is enough to damage it.

🌊 The Syncra HF 16.0

The Syncra HF 16.0 belongs to Sicce's high-flow range. It delivers up to 16,000 L/h for 175 W, with a maximum head of 4.5 m. Like the ADV models, it works submerged or placed out of the water, below the pond's water level, which makes maintenance of a large system easier. It switches itself off if the rotor jams, and thermal protection cuts it out in the event of overheating. Its outlet is a 1" 1/2 thread, with fittings for large pipe supplied. At 175 W running continuously, it uses about 4.2 kWh a day, nearly double an ADV 10.0: reserve it for volumes that justify it.

🌱 In aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, the pump circulates water from the fish tank to the crops, then returns it by gravity. It runs continuously, so its consumption matters as much as its price: the ADV 5.5 uses about 0.96 kWh per day, the ADV 7.0 about 1.32 kWh, the ADV 9.0 and 10.0 about 2.16 kWh and the HF 16.0 about 4.2 kWh. Circulate the volume of the fish tank at least once an hour. The guide to building your own aquaponic system explains in detail where the pump sits in the circuit. So as not to interrupt circulation during cleaning, a second, smaller pump can be kept on standby.
