Tape tier that fastens stem and stake with a single squeeze
This tying tool attaches a stem to its support in a single motion. You position the stem and wire between the jaws, squeeze the handle, and the tool wraps the tape around both, closes the loop with a staple, then cuts the tape. Your left hand remains free to hold the stem.

The mechanism performs three operations in a single squeeze of the handle. The tape wraps around the stem and the support, the clip pierces the overlap and locks it in place, and the blade separates the loop from the rest of the roll. The result is a closed loop, with no knot to tighten and no adjustment to redo from one plant to the next. It is this consistency that changes the work more than the speed does, because a hand-tied knot is pulled tighter or looser depending on fatigue and the time of day, and it is the over-tight tie that marks the stem a fortnight later. This is most visible on tomatoes trained on stakes, because the stem keeps thickening right through to the end of summer.

The roll of tape and the strip of staples run out at roughly the same time. Keep spares to hand, because a strip that runs out mid-row brings the tool to a complete stop. The third wear point is the cutting blade, when the tape starts to stretch rather than cut cleanly, that is where to look, as sap dries on it and prevents a clean cut.
Plan the entire row before you start
Count your fastening points before the season rather than as you go, since a row of tomatoes trained over five months requires around ten clips per plant. Stock up on replacement tape and staples accordingly, and keep them dry alongside the tool. The rest of the row can be set up with the growing supports and horticultural accessories in the catalogue.
A tie left in place will strangle the stem
The tape does not degrade over the season, and a tomato stem keeps thickening throughout summer. Loop it loosely, in a figure of eight around the stem and the support rather than tight around both, and go back to cut the oldest ties when you remove leaves. At the end of the growing season, remove the tape and clips along with the stems, as they do not break down in compost and would remain in your soil for years.
