Organic fertiliser in slow-release pellets
These organic fertiliser pellets combine fish, feather, blood and bone meals with humic acids. Pushed into the grow medium, they release their nitrogen slowly with each watering, at a rate of one pellet per 5 L of potting compost, with no mixing or dose calculation.
The summary
- Principle: organic-origin NPK 15-7-8 fertiliser pellets, released slowly by the life in the grow medium.
- What they contain: fish, feather, blood and bone meals, with humic acids.
- How many to use: 1 pellet per 5 L of grow medium, 4 to 5 per 50 L.
- Containers: plants in pots, trays or grow bags, in potting compost or on coconut fibre.
- Around the pond: for the clay pots in the greenhouse, never in the fish water.
- The system's deficiencies: chelated iron and potassium, to be dosed separately.
Organic fertiliser pellets to push into the grow medium of potted crops
Biotabs GrowTabs are organic NPK 15-7-8 fertiliser tablets made from animal meal, humic acids and soil bacteria. Allow one tablet for a 5 L pot and 4 to 5 for 50 L, with Startrex at repotting. The box of 10 covers ten pots, while the boxes of 100 and 400 will serve a vegetable garden, never a pond.
Biotabs GrowTabs are organic fertiliser tablets designed for container growing. Each tablet combines fish, feather, blood and bone meals, bound with humic acids and soil bacteria. These materials are not directly absorbable: the microbial life in the grow medium gradually mineralises them, so the nitrogen is released slowly with each watering. You therefore have no solution to prepare and no dose to recalculate, since the tablet acts as a reserve.
🌱 One tablet per 5 litres
The number of tablets is set by the volume of the pot rather than by the plant. Allow 1 tablet for 5 L of grow medium, 2 for 10 L, 3 for 20 L, 4 for 30 L, 4 to 5 for 50 L and 6 for 70 L, adjusting to the crop's appetite. Push the tablets in to a depth of 5 to 10 cm, spread around the base of the stem, where the roots will come looking for them. A 4 L fabric pot therefore takes a single tablet.
5 L
1 tablet, for a pot of basil or a lettuce plant in a container.
10 L
2 tablets, for a chilli or an aubergine grown in a pot.
20 L
3 tablets, for one tomato plant in a large container.
50 L
4 to 5 tablets, for a grow bag filled with several plants.
🦠 A living grow medium
This approach relies on a living grow medium. An organic potting compost, such as the light peat-free potting compost, hosts the micro-organisms that convert the meals into forms plants can absorb, whereas an inert medium greatly slows this mineralisation. Watering is done with tap water, with no pH or conductivity to measure, which clearly sets this method apart from liquid feeding. If your compost comes from a new bag and is poor in microbial life, the Startrex organic soil improver mixed in at potting, 25 g per 5 litres, provides the bacteria that will do this work, and the Orgatrex liquid fertiliser takes over at watering for the hungriest crops.
Keep the pellets out of the fish circuit
These pellets go only into the grow medium of a pot or a container of potting compost. In an aquaponic growing bed, animal meal breaking down in water shared with the fish would add an organic load and ammonium that nobody controls. Store the box in a dry place, out of reach of children and pets.
Recycling scraps into fertiliser with a worm composter
If you grow in pots all year round, the Worm Café wormery turns your peelings into worm compost and worm tea. Mixed into potting compost, this compost enriches the grow medium with micro-organisms, precisely those that then mineralise the pellets. The two complement each other over a whole season.
The rate of release therefore depends on the activity of these micro-organisms. A grow medium kept cool and moist, in a pot at growing temperature, mineralises the meals steadily, whereas a compost that dries out completely between waterings or a pot left in the cold in winter noticeably slows nitrogen release. So water your pots regularly, without soaking the grow medium, and do not count on the pellets to feed a dormant plant: they work during the growing season, when the roots are exploring the pot.
🐟 Their place in aquaponics
In aquaponics, the fish provide the nitrogen: their waste, turned into nitrates by the bacteria in the filter, feeds the plants in the system. The pellets therefore have no place in the grow beds, nor in the cubes or pots for seedlings intended to join the system, where leftover meal would end up in the fish water. They do, however, have their use in the greenhouse, around the system: pots of tomatoes, chillies or herbs grown in compost, raised beds and grow bags, which do not share the pond water and which you feed separately.
The shortfalls in your aquaponic system are corrected with other products, dosed directly into the water. Potassium is often the limiting element: it is supplied by potassium bicarbonate, which also raises the pH, or by a compatible fertiliser such as Aquaponic Mix. Iron is topped up with DTPA chelated iron, at a rate of 2 mg/L roughly every three weeks, and calcium with calcium hydroxide added alternately with the potassium base. If your crops need more, a plant loop separate from the fish loop, known as decoupled, lets you correct the nutrition without touching the water in the tanks. The guide which fertiliser to use in aquaponics details these additions.
🪴 10, 100 or 400 pellets
The box of 10 tablets, weighing about 200 g, is enough for around ten 5 L pots or for 2 large 50 L grow bags. The box of 100, weighing about 2 kg, is better suited to a whole balcony or a vegetable garden in raised beds, where the price per tablet drops. The 400-tablet pack equips a large garden of containers or a series of grow bags, at the lowest price per tablet. In every case, keep the tablets in their closed box, in a dry place.
