This pH+ corrector is based on humic acids of natural origin and contains no strong acid. Added in small doses to the irrigation water or the nutrient solution, it raises the pH towards 6.2 to 6.5, in soil, on coco fibre and in hydroponics alike, without upsetting the life in the grow medium.

The summary

  • Composition: a liquid pH+ regulator based on natural humic acids, with no strong acid.
  • Target: a pH of 6.2 to 6.5 once the fertilisers have been mixed into the water.
  • Method: additions of around 0.1 ml, with a reading after each one.
  • Systems: conventional watering and hydroponics, indoors and outdoors.
  • Fish water: for the plant loop of a decoupled system, never in the pond.
  • Monitoring: a pH meter accurate to a tenth or a drop test kit, with every preparation.

Humic formula to raise the pH of irrigation water and nutrient solutions

BioBizz Bio-Up is an organic pH+ adjuster made with humic acids, with no strong acid. It is added in small doses to the watering solution already mixed with fertilisers from the range, such as Bio-Grow, until the pH reaches 6.2 to 6.5. The pond in an aquaponic system, by contrast, is corrected with a mineral base, never with Bio-Up.

BioBizz Bio-Up is a pH+ regulator designed for organic growing. Its formula is based on humic acids from natural sources, the organic molecules found in the humus of soils. It contains no strong acid, which makes it gentle on the microbial life of the grow medium. You use it when the pH of your watering water, once the fertilisers are mixed in, falls below the target range, at all stages of the crop and with all grow media.

⚖️ Raising a pH that is too acidic

pH measures the acidity of water on a scale from 0 to 14, and each point of difference represents an acidity ten times stronger or weaker. A pH that is too low makes some nutrients less available to the roots, so the plant can show signs of deficiency even though the fertiliser is present in the pot. With BioBizz fertilisers, the target is between 6.2 and 6.5, a slightly acidic range in which most vegetables absorb their nutrients well. Rainwater or reverse osmosis water, which contain few minerals, or certain organic fertiliser mixes often give a pH below this range.

The dose cannot be fixed in advance, because it depends on your water and your fertilisers. Add the Bio-Up in small amounts, of around 0.1 ml at a time, stir for about ten seconds, then measure again, until you reach the target range. Water with very little mineral content reacts quickly, whereas hard water resists corrections more, which is known as its buffering capacity. The article on rainwater explains why water that is poor in minerals changes pH at the slightest addition.

Measure to the nearest tenth with an electronic tester

The correction comes down to a few tenths of a point, which a drop colour chart reads with difficulty. An electronic pH tester displays the value to the nearest tenth within seconds and compensates for temperature, so you see the effect of each addition of Bio-Up immediately. You thus avoid overshooting the target and then having to correct in the other direction with a pH- solution.

Wash your hands and rinse your eyes after contact

In case of skin contact, wash gently with soapy water. In case of splashes in the eyes, rinse with water for several minutes, removing contact lenses if possible. Store the bottle in a cool place, away from sunlight, out of reach of children and away from food.

Mix

The fertilisers provided are first diluted in the watering water.

Measure

The pH of the mix rises before any correction.

Add

A small dose of Bio-Up is added, then the solution is stirred for 10 seconds.

Check

A new reading shows whether the addition needs repeating.

The order of these steps matters, because fertilisers themselves change the pH of the water. A correction made before adding the fertiliser would therefore be wrong from the first capful poured. Always measure the final solution, the one that will actually reach the roots, and then correct it. With a pH drop test, take the sample after stirring well, so that the Bio-Up is spread throughout the whole volume before you read it.

🌱 Soil, coco fibre, hydroponics

Bio-Up can be used at every watering if needed, with all grow media and all the liquid fertilisers in the range, such as Bio-Grow or Bio-Bloom, whether you water by hand or run a hydroponic system. It can be combined with Bio-Down, its citric acid counterpart, to correct pH in either direction depending on the day's reading. In coco fibre, which barely buffers pH at all, this check goes with every batch you mix. In hydroponics, the pH of the sump tank shifts over the course of a few days as the plants take up nutrients, which is why regular monitoring makes more sense than a single adjustment when you fill the tank.

In open ground or in a compost rich in organic matter, soil life cushions pH variations, so corrections are needed less often than in soilless growing. This is where the absence of a strong acid matters most: Bio-Up raises the pH without harming the bacteria and fungi that break down organic matter and release nutrients. You can check the effect of your corrections by occasionally measuring the water that drains out from under the pot, which reflects the true condition of the root ball better than the water you pour in.

🐟 The pH of an aquaponic system

In an aquaponic system, the pH drops of its own accord. Nitrification, the work of the filter bacteria that convert the fish's ammonia into nitrate, consumes the water's alkalinity and produces acid. The target pH is also higher than in hydroponics, between 6.8 and 7.0, because the fish, the bacteria and the plants all have to be looked after; the tolerable range extends from 6.4 to 7.4. Below 6.4, correction is made with a mineral base added very slowly, over several days, such as calcium or potassium hydroxide, or potassium bicarbonate for aquaponics, which supplies potassium to the plants at the same time.

Bio-Up is dosed for irrigation water and nutrient solutions, not for water in which fish live, so you do not pour it into the pond. It does, however, have its place in a decoupled aquaponic system, where the fish water feeds a separate plant loop that does not return to the pond. In this loop, you can bring the solution down to 6.2 to 6.5, the range vegetables prefer, without touching the fish's pH. To monitor the pond's alkalinity, which must stay at no less than 100 mg/L expressed as calcium carbonate, a KH carbonate hardness test complements the pH reading, as the article regulating pH in an aquaponic system explains in detail.
