Lotus Red Light 15
This bowl lotus opens single carmine-red flowers of about 10 cm in summer, on a plant 20 to 30 cm tall. It flowers in a bowl, a decorative pot or a mini pond of 10 to 20 litres, in full sun.
The rhizome is shipped from 1 April to 15 June, dormant and before the leaves emerge. An order placed outside this period is shipped when the following season opens.

Carmine red bowl lotus, 20 to 30 cm, for a 10 to 20 litre pot
The Red Light 15 is a bowl lotus, a recent introduction from the United States. It bears single flowers of about 10 cm, in a rich carmine red, on a plant that rises 20 to 30 cm above the water. You receive a dormant rhizome, to be planted in a bowl, a decorative pot or a mini pond of 10 to 20 litres.
🌟 The carmine-red flower
The flower opens wide, with pointed petals of a dense carmine red, around a crown of yellow stamens with white tips that frames a yellow receptacle. About ten centimetres across, it is best admired up close, at table or windowsill height, which suits a container placed on a patio. Flowering takes place in summer, and each bud rises above foliage of 10 to 15 cm, so the flower stands clearly above the leaves of the bowl.
Taking the temperature of the water in the bowl
The rhizome stays dormant until the water has reached 20 °C, and a bowl of a few litres changes temperature much faster than a pond. The suction-cup aquarium thermometer sticks to the inside wall of the container and tells you when growth can begin. You can then tell whether a late start is down to water that is still cold rather than to a rhizome in difficulty.
📏 A bowl lotus
Bowl lotuses are the miniature cultivars, those that flower in a few litres of soil and are grown without a pond. Red Light 15 is one of them, at 20 to 30 cm tall with leaves of 10 to 15 cm, which lets you bring flowers to a sunny terrace or balcony. It does, however, need full sun, heavy soil and shallow water, whether the container is a ceramic bowl, a washing-up bowl or a mini pond. You choose this container once for 2 to 3 years, since the plant stays in it until its first division.
The volume
A bowl, a decorative pot or a mini pond of 10 to 20 litres will do.
Water
It covers the soil by 10 to 20 cm, measured from its surface.
The bottom
The container stays full, with no drainage holes, so that it holds its water.
The soil
A heavy, clay-based soil that does not float up when the pond is filled.
Keep this lotus for a bowl or a patio
At 20 to 30 cm tall with leaves of 10 to 15 cm, this lotus gets lost in a body of water of several square metres and plays no shading role there. Order it for a bowl, a terrace water pot or a mini pond, where the flower is viewed up close.
📆 The rhythm of divisions
In a container of 10 to 20 litres, this lotus can be left without division for 2 to 3 years. After that, the rhizome fills the whole volume, and you divide it in March, before growth starts: the root ball comes out by turning the bowl over, the chain of tubers is cut 3 or 4 cm from an internode, and you replant the end piece, whose growing tip must remain intact. The rest of the time, care is limited to a few aquatic plant fertiliser tablets pushed into the soil in spring, a formula in which nitrogen dominates, as lotuses require.
❄️ Winter in a bowl
The lotus is neither a tropical plant nor a difficult one: this cultivar is hardy, tolerates frost as well as a hardy water lily does and is more vigorous than one, so you can leave it outdoors all year round. In autumn, the foliage yellows and then dies back, and the rhizome spends the winter in its soil, under water. A raised container does freeze more deeply than a dug pond, however: if your winters are harsh, sink the container into the ground up to its rim, or bring it into a frost-free room, keeping the soil submerged. The guide to growing lotus in aquaponics also describes overwintering the rhizome in a bucket of fresh water, in a frost-free cellar.
