These small measuring cups in clear plastic, graduated and fitted with a handle, measure liquid fertilisers, pH correctors and additives before they are poured into the watering can or the sump tank. They are sold in sets: five of 50 ml, three of 100 ml or two of 250 ml.
The summary
- What it is: graduated measuring cups in clear plastic, with a handle and a spout.
- The sizes: 5 x 50 ml graduated every 2 ml, 3 x 100 ml or 2 x 250 ml graduated every 5 ml.
- In aquaponics: each supplement is measured, diluted in a bucket, then poured slowly into the tank, away from where the fish are.
- Why several: one cup per product, so you never mix two concentrates.
One glass per product to measure out liquid fertilisers without mixing them
These small measuring cups in clear plastic, graduated and fitted with a handle, measure liquid fertilisers, pH correctors and additives before dilution. The 50 ml cup is graduated every 2 ml, the 100 and 250 ml cups every 5 ml. In aquaponics, each supplement is diluted in a bucket before it reaches the fish tank.
A liquid fertiliser is dosed in millilitres per litre of water, and a few millilitres either way will change the conductivity of your sump tank. These measuring cups in clear plastic, graduated and fitted with a handle and a spout, measure these small quantities before dilution. The 50 ml cup is graduated every 2 ml, and the 100 ml and 250 ml cups every 5 ml, which is enough for most doses of fertiliser, pH adjuster or biostimulant for a watering can or a home sump tank.
🧪 One glass per product
Two- or three-part fertilisers must never meet undiluted: when mixed in concentrated form, some elements precipitate and become unusable for plants. The simplest approach is to keep one glass for each product, marked with a felt pen, and to pour each dose into the water separately, stirring between additions. That is why these glasses are sold in sets: five small 50 ml glasses for a full range of fertilisers and additives, three 100 ml glasses or two 250 ml glasses for sump tank doses. The liquid supplements in the shop's ranges often fall within these volumes: the seaweed root stimulator is dosed at 40 ml per 10 L in the first week, and the liquid potassium supplement at 10 to 20 ml per 10 L, which the 50 ml glass measures to within 2 ml in a hydroponics sump tank. Neither of these products ever goes into the fish water. That way you keep each product in its own glass, week after week, with no risk of mix-ups.
🐟 Dosing without overdosing in aquaponics
In aquaponics, supplements are added to water in which fish live, and an overdose is hard to put right. A pH corrector or supplement should therefore be measured in a measuring cup, diluted in a bucket of water from the system, then spread slowly across your tank, well away from where the fish gather. The article on regulating the pH of an aquaponics system explains the method, and the guide to which fertiliser to use in aquaponics presents the supplements that are dosed this way.
Supplements sold as a powder can also be measured in a cup, provided you first prepare a stock solution. DTPA chelated iron, for example, is dosed at 18 g per 1,000 L of water when aiming for 2 mg of iron per litre. Dissolve those 18 g in 1 L of water: each 50 ml portion then contains 0.9 g of powder, enough to treat 50 L. For a 200 L system, you pour in 200 ml of this solution, measured in the 250 ml cup, instead of weighing out 3.6 g on kitchen scales.
Rinse the glass between two products
A dregs of acid or concentrate left in a glass reacts with the next product. Rinse each glass with clean water after use, and never measure a pH corrector in the glass reserved for a fertiliser.
A graduated syringe for doses under 5 ml
Below 5 ml, a graduated syringe measures more finely than a measuring cup, since its graduations go down to the millilitre and below. The two complement each other in the same dosing station: the cup for the base doses of a sump tank, the syringe for trace elements and correctors added to within a few drops. This avoids rounding a 2 ml dose up to 5 ml, which is more than double the quantity intended.
📐 Reading a graduation accurately
The surface of a liquid in a narrow glass forms a slight curve, the meniscus, which rises along the wall. Read the value at the bottom of this curve, with your eye level with the mark and the glass standing flat on a table: viewed from above, the level looks higher than it is, and the dose poured is too small. Pour the product slowly up to the mark, rather than overshooting and then pouring the excess back into the container, which would contaminate the concentrate. For a dose that falls between two marks, choose the smaller glass, whose graduations are closer together.
50 ml, pack of 5
Additives and correctors dosed at a few millilitres for a watering can or a small tray.
100 ml, pack of 3
The base fertilisers for a sump tank of a few dozen litres.
250 ml, pack of 2
The doses for a large sump tank, or the stock solution of a powdered supplement.
Beyond 250 ml, the graduated measuring cup from 500 ml to 5 L takes over for large volumes, such as filling a tank or preparing a complete nutrient solution. Store your cups upside down, away from dust, after rinsing them and letting them air dry: a clean cup leaves no trace of product that would skew the next dose, and its graduations stay legible season after season.
