This botanical activator is derived from aloe vera and contains no ingredients of animal origin. Added to the irrigation water at 1 to 5 ml per litre, or sprayed on the foliage, it helps the plant and the life in the grow medium to make better use of organic fertilisers, particularly in coco fibre.

The summary

  • Origin: an entirely plant-based botanical activator made from aloe vera, with a few trace elements.
  • Role: to support the plant's metabolism and the breakdown of organic fertilisers in the grow medium.
  • Dose: 1 to 5 ml per litre when watering, 1 to 2 ml per litre on the foliage.
  • Grow media: soil, potting compost and especially coco coir, where it is recommended with an adjusted pH.
  • With fish: for seedlings in small pots and neighbouring pots, not for the pond water.
  • Companion fertilisers: Fish-Mix or Bio-Grow from the same range, which it complements without replacing.

Aloe vera extract to help the grow medium and the plant make the most of organic fertilisers

BioBizz's Acti-Vera is a botanical activator made with aloe vera that supplies iron, manganese, boron, zinc, copper and molybdenum. It is dosed at 1 to 5 ml per litre of watering or at 1 to 2 ml per litre as a foliar spray, together with Fish-Mix or Bio-Grow, for soil and coco fibre, outside the aquaponic circuit.

Acti-Vera is a botanical activator from BioBizz made from aloe vera, a succulent plant, and it is entirely vegan. Its label classes it among the organo-mineral fertilisers, because it supplies small amounts of trace elements: roughly 3,420 mg of iron per kilo, 321 mg of manganese, 191 mg of boron, plus zinc, copper and molybdenum. You use it to help the plant make better use of the fertilisers you are already giving it, on vegetables, herbs and soft fruit as well as on ornamental plants.

🌵 The role of an activator

An organic fertiliser cannot be absorbed as it is: some of its nutrients first have to be converted by the micro-organisms in the grow medium. Acti-Vera works at this stage, helping to break down the sugars present in organic fertilisers, and it also supports the plant's metabolism and nutrient uptake. It helps germination too. So you combine it with an organic fertiliser, such as those in the organic fertilisers and bioponics collection or the Fish-Mix and Bio-Grow from the same range, without it replacing them.

Its trace elements remain in small quantities, but they affect specific functions. Iron is involved in the production of chlorophyll, manganese takes part in photosynthesis, boron supports the formation of cell walls and the fertilisation of flowers, while zinc, copper and molybdenum play a role in the functioning of enzymes. A plant that is well fed by its base fertiliser generally does not lack them, which is why the label restricts use to cases of recognised need. Acti-Vera therefore does not replace a deficiency corrector, but it is a useful complement to organic fertilisation.

Coco fibre ready to receive an activator

Coco fibre is a clean grow medium but almost devoid of microbial life, so an organic fertiliser is poorly broken down in it without help. When growing in coco fibre, the feeding programme therefore calls for adjusting the pH and adding an enzymatic product such as Acti-Vera. If you are starting crops in BioBizz Coco-Mix coco fibre or in a 50 litre bag of coco fibre, plan for it from the very first waterings, using water whose pH has been adjusted.

Stay within the range of 1 to 5 ml per litre

Its label carries the regulatory statement required for fertilisers containing trace elements: the product is to be used when a need has been established and without exceeding the stated dose. An overdose speeds nothing up and loads the solution with elements the plant does not use. Keep the high dose for periods of strong growth and keep the bottle out of the reach of children.

💧 Watering or spraying

For watering, allow 1 to 5 ml per litre of water. As a foliar spray, the dose drops to 1 or 2 ml per litre, at one to three applications per week until the second week of flowering. If you are preparing a foliar mix with Alg-A-Mic and Fish-Mix, limit each of the three products to 1 ml per litre. Preferably spray outside the hours of strong light, onto dry foliage, wetting the undersides of the leaves as well. Acti-Vera can be used indoors or outdoors, during growth and flowering.

The 250 ml bottle is enough for a few pots, the one-litre bottle suits a family vegetable garden and the 5 litre container suits greenhouses or large gardens. As with any organic product, prepare the solution at the time of use rather than several days in advance, and rinse the sprayer with clean water after each use so that the nozzle does not clog. The neat product has a pH of 4.15, slightly acidic: measure the pH of the final solution after adding it to your fertiliser, especially in coco fibre.

The range's feeding schedule changes the dose over the course of the season rather than fixing it once and for all. It starts at 2 ml per litre for cuttings and during growth, rises to 3 ml in the first week of flowering, to 4 ml in the second, then to 5 ml for the following two weeks, before gradually dropping back to 1 ml at the end of the cycle. This curve follows the plant's activity: you give more when it is building its flowers and fruit, and cut back as it approaches harvest. If you grow in a peat-free compost, the dedicated schedule follows the same curve with a lower peak, at 4 ml per litre.

This schedule applies to most fruiting vegetables grown in pots, such as tomatoes, peppers and aubergines, whose flowering is spread over several weeks. For salads, herbs or leafy vegetables harvested before they flower, simply stay at the growth step, at 2 ml per litre. Measure each dose with a syringe or a graduated glass rather than with the bottle cap, and do not exceed 5 ml per litre, the upper dose on the technical data sheet.

🐟 Seedlings and pots around the pond

Acti-Vera is dosed for watering crops grown in soil, potting compost or coir, not for water where fish, bacteria and plants live together, so you do not pour it into the pond of an aquaponic system. Its iron content might suggest that it corrects the yellowing common in aquaponic plants, but that job belongs to a DTPA chelated iron, dosed to maintain around 2 mg/L of iron in the system water, and safe for fish.

It does, however, find its place in the nursery, away from the system, when you start your plants in coco fibre pots before setting them in the grow bed. Watered with an organic solution and Acti-Vera during their first few weeks, the plants form their roots in a living grow medium; simply rinse the base of the pot with clean water when you install them in the system. It is also suited to soil beds and to the pots around your setup. The article on the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics explains how the plants in the system receive their own nutrients.
