JBL's CleroPond restores the clarity of cloudy pond water. It binds fine suspended particles into flocs, which the filter catches or which settle on the bottom.
Available in a 500 ml bottle, for 10 m³, or in a 2.5 L container, for 50 m³.
The summary
- Which size: 500 ml for 10 m³, 2.5 L for 50 m³.
- How it works: flocculation of suspended particles.
- The dosage: 40 ml for 700 to 800 litres.
- After treatment: rinse the filter 1 to 2 days later.
Check the bottom of the pond again the next day
Pond water can be cloudy without being green. After building work, heavy rain, a clean-out or fish rooting around on the bottom, fine particles of soil, clay or debris stay in suspension. They are too small to be caught by the filter foam and can cloud your water for weeks. JBL's CleroPond solves this problem by flocculation.
🔍 How flocculation works
CleroPond works as soon as it is poured in: it gathers the fine suspended particles into small flocs, large enough to be caught by the filter or to sink to the bottom, where you remove them with a pond vacuum. The water clears as the filter captures the flocs. The product is harmless to fish, so you can treat the pond without moving them.
The dose is 40 ml per 700 to 800 litres of water, or roughly 50 ml per cubic metre. The 500 ml bottle therefore treats about 10 m³, and the 2.5 L container about 50 m³. Dilute the dose in a watering can filled with pond water and spread it over the whole surface with the filter running, so that the flocs are captured as they form.
Rinse the filter the day after treatment
The flakes build up in the filter foams, and the flow rate drops. Rinse them in a bucket of pond water 1 or 2 days after the treatment, never under tap water, as the chlorine would kill the bacteria in the filter.
📐 A practical example
Take a 4,000-litre pond, clouded by soil after planting new marginal plants. You need about 200 ml of CleroPond, a little less than half of the 500 ml bottle. The next day, the water is noticeably clearer and the filter has caught a good share of the flocs: all that remains is to rinse the foam and remove the fine sediment that has formed on the bottom.
A sludge vacuum to remove the flakes that have settled
The flakes that the filter does not catch settle on the bottom, where the movement of the fish would put them back into suspension. The EHEIM VAC40 sludge vacuum removes them along with the accumulated sludge, without emptying the pond. Your water stays clear for longer than with the clarifier alone.
Green water, on the other hand, is caused by living microscopic algae, which multiply again if nothing changes. Against it, a UV-C steriliser is more effective than a clarifier, and the guide to 5 solutions for green pond water presents the methods that do not involve a product. CleroPond is the tool for mineral and organic cloudiness, when your pond has just suffered a one-off disturbance.
Cloudy water can also come from your pond itself. A bottom lined with soil or unwashed sand releases particles every time the fish swim past, koi and large goldfish constantly dig around on the bottom, and a pump placed too close to the bottom draws in the sludge. In these cases, the clarifier clears the water but the cloudiness returns: cover the bottom with washed pebbles instead and raise the pump intake. Milky water after overfeeding calls first for a check of the ammonia and nitrite levels.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, cloudy water most often comes from excess food, inadequate mechanical filtration or the start-up of the bacterial flora. CleroPond is designed for garden ponds: in a circuit connected to crops, treat the cause instead by reducing the ration, adding a settling stage or cleaning the filter. The guide to understanding and correcting cloudy water in aquaponics describes each situation.
