Newa Pure Light 9 W UV-C steriliser for aquarium, pond and aquaponics
The Newa Pure Light 9 W is an external UV-C steriliser, to be fitted on the return pipe of a pump or filter.
It clears green water in volumes of 150 to 700 L in an aquarium and 3,500 to 7,500 L in a pond.
The summary
- What volume: up to 700 L in an aquarium and 7,500 L in a pond to clear green water.
- Which pump: from 400 to 1,200 L/h, on a 13, 20 or 25 mm pipe.
- Where to place it: out of the water, on the pump pipe, in the shade.
- Its safety: cut-out on opening, connectors that light up when the lamp is working.
Clear water without chemicals, on your pump's circuit
The Newa Pure Light 9 W is an external UV-C steriliser that connects to the pipe of a pump or filter, outside the water. The water passing through it runs alongside a 9 W UV-C lamp, protected by a quartz tube, whose radiation stops the microscopic algae suspended in the water from multiplying. These are what turn water green, and they are too fine to be caught by filter foam. Once inactivated, they clump together into particles that your filter traps, so the water clears without any added product. The same radiation also reduces free-floating bacteria and parasites in the water passing in front of the lamp.
🔌 On the pump circuit
The unit is placed out of the water, next to the tank or pond, and connects to the pipe leaving the pump, before the water returns to the tank. It can also follow a filter, provided that the pressure in the circuit stays below 0.4 bar, its operating limit. The supplied adaptors take pipes of 13, 20 and 25 mm: you cut them to the diameter of your pipe, then screw them onto the two fittings on the body. The recommended flow rate runs from 400 to 1,200 L/h, and the water must circulate continuously whenever the lamp is on, as the unit must never run dry. Fix it to a stable support in wood, stone or metal using the lugs moulded into the body, in the mounting position shown in the instructions, and leave enough length of pipe to be able to open the head of the unit without dismantling everything.
A compactON 1000 to power the Pure Light
On an aquarium or a small aquaponics tank, the EHEIM compactON 1000 pump is adjustable from 400 to 1,000 L/h, which places it within the flow range of the steriliser. Trimmed to suit a 19/27 mm pipe, its stepped fitting connects to the 20 mm connector of the Pure Light, which corresponds to that 3/4-inch diameter. You reduce the flow to slow the passage of water past the lamp when you are also targeting germs, and you open it fully when the aim is simply to clear the water.
📐 Clarifying or sterilising
The volume the Pure Light can treat depends on what you expect from it. To clear green water, it is enough for the algae to pass in front of the lamp regularly, and the unit suits an aquarium of 150 to 700 litres or a pond of 3,500 to 7,500 litres, depending on sunlight and fish load: the more exposed or heavily stocked the pond, the closer you stay to the bottom of the range. To also reduce bacteria and free-floating parasites, which amounts to partial sterilisation, each litre must pass in front of the lamp more often, so the volume treated is limited to 60 to 150 litres in an aquarium and 450 to 750 litres in a pond. In a 5,000-litre pond that turns green every summer, a 1,000 L/h pump moves the whole volume through in 5 hours, almost 5 times a day, and the water generally clears within a few days.

Unplug before opening, never look at the lamp
UV-C radiation is dangerous to the eyes and skin: never look at the lamp while it is on, and never run it outside the unit. A safety switch turns the lamp off if the head is opened, and the transparent end caps glow blue to show that it is working, so you do not need to look inside. Always unplug the unit before any work on it, protect the circuit with an RCD of 30 mA or less, and never immerse the unit in water.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, the most common use is to clear the water in a fish tank exposed to the sun, which turns green in spring or summer. You run the unit until the water is clear again, then switch it off, which spares the lamp and saves electricity. The nitrifying bacteria are not affected, because they live attached to the filter media and in the grow beds, and only the water passing through the unit is treated. The second use concerns rainwater stored in a tank: by passing it in front of the lamp on its way from the tank to the fish tank, you limit the entry of germs and parasites into the system. However, the unit must never be connected to the public water mains. If you add chelated iron for your plants, switch the lamp off for the 6 to 12 hours following the addition, as ultraviolet light breaks down the chelate. The guide on cloudy water in aquaponics helps you tell green water from a bacterial haze, and the article on green pond water explains in detail what a steriliser actually treats.
🏡 Beside a pond
Outdoors, install the Pure Light at least 2 m from the edge of your pond, on a fixed support placed outside any area liable to flooding, so that it can never fall into the water. Choose a shaded spot, as the body must not be left in full sun, and use the 5 m cable to form a loop lower than the socket, so that any water running down it drips to the ground instead of reaching the socket. Do not bury the cable: outdoors, the connection must follow local electrical regulations, and a qualified electrician should check it if necessary. The water passing through the unit must stay between 4 and 35 °C, so before the frosts you drain it, dismantle it and store it under cover until spring.
🧽 Lamp and quartz tube
A UV-C lamp loses effectiveness well before it goes out, so it is replaced roughly every 5,000 to 6,000 hours, that is one pond season or 8 to 10 months in an aquarium. The replacement lamp for the 9 W model carries the reference 00.184.002. At each change, clean the quartz sleeve that protects it with a non-abrasive glass cleaner, without any object that would scratch it, because a film of limescale or biofilm blocks a good part of the radiation and the water can turn green again even with a new lamp. While you are at it, check the quartz sealing ring, which should be replaced if it is flattened, cracked or has hardened. Finally, note the date of each lamp change on the unit, so you know where you stand the following season.
