This sheet of filter media measures 100 x 120 cm by 3.8 cm thick, and can be cut to the exact size of your filter chamber.

It traps particles and hosts the nitrifying bacteria. It is wrung out in tank water and only needs replacing when it tears.

The summary

  • What you receive: a sheet measuring 100 x 120 cm, 3.8 cm thick, giving 1.2 m² in a single piece.
  • What it does: it traps particles and houses bacteria, both at once.
  • How to choose: a sheet for a custom-built housing, loose media for an off-the-shelf basket.
  • The daily effort: a rinse and squeeze in the tank water, never under the tap.
  • What you need to have ready: a long-blade utility knife and something to mark out the cuts before you make them.
  • What it replaces: an original cartridge that can no longer be found, cut to the exact dimensions.

A sheet to cut yourself, for a made-to-measure filtration chamber

This sheet of filter media measures 100 by 120 cm and is 3.8 cm thick, and it is sold by surface area rather than by the litre: you cut it with a utility knife to the exact dimensions of your filtration chamber. It is useful wherever no off-the-shelf cartridge fits easily, in a hand-built settling tank, a compartmentalised box, a collection tank or a filter whose original cartridge is no longer made.

✂️ Cutting to exact dimensions

First measure the opening of your chamber, then mark it out in felt-tip pen on the dry sheet, adding 1 to 2 cm on each side. Then cut with a long-blade utility knife, in a single continuous pass, with the sheet lying perfectly flat on a surface the blade can mark. A slightly compressed piece hugs the walls and does not let water slip past it, whereas a cut that is too tight leaves a gap along a wall, through which the water bypasses the filtration. Test-fit the piece dry before any water goes in, because a dry sheet is easily trimmed in small passes. If your chamber is not rectangular, work from a cardboard template, which you then transfer to the sheet before cutting.

A 1.2 m² sheet is divided into several pieces, and the calculation is done before the first cut to waste as little material as possible. For a 30 by 40 cm compartment, you cut pieces of 32 by 42 cm: the sheet yields 8, of which 6 are laid out in one direction and 2 more, turned a quarter turn, fit in the 36 cm strip left at the end of the sheet. For a square chamber 50 cm along each side, the 52 cm pieces only fit twice in the sheet, and the remainder gives you offcuts for touch-ups. Mark out all the pieces with a felt pen before the first cut, starting with the largest, since a layout mistake can be corrected on the markings and not on a sheet that has already been cut into. Keep the offcuts dry: they will provide the replacement piece on the day a partition wears out.

🧽 Two functions in the same sheet

The open structure of the mat does two jobs at once. Mechanically, it traps suspended particles, waste, uneaten feed and plant debris, which stay caught within its thickness instead of circulating in your pond. Biologically, the same surface becomes covered within a few weeks with a film of nitrifying bacteria, which convert the ammonia excreted by the fish into nitrites and then nitrates. You therefore get clearer water and part of the nitrification in the same piece, so maintenance must protect this film rather than strip it away.

Combine the plate with bioballs downstream

If your filter has several compartments, keep the mat for the first one and fill the next with EHEIM bioballs for pond filters. The mat traps particles, while the spheres, which let water pass through without clogging, provide a colonisation surface that stays clear between servicing. You can then open the filter to rinse out the mat without touching the spheres, and nitrification carries on while you clean.

A plate in use never goes under the tap

The chlorine in mains water destroys the bacterial film that has built up on the plate, and the filter then has to go through several weeks of start-up again. Rinse it out in a bucket of water taken from the tank, and only that. Hot water and detergents have the same effect on the bacterial population, and they also distort the structure of the plate.

🧭 Its place in the circuit

In the direction of the water flow, the plate comes first: it goes in the compartment that receives the dirty water, the water arriving from the fish tank or from the bottom of the pond. The biological media are then placed in the following compartments, where they receive water that has already been cleared of its particles. Placed after them, the plate would catch deposits that would already have fouled what it was meant to protect. Wedge it so that all the water passes through it, as a vertical partition between two compartments or lying flat on a perforated support when the water arrives from above. On a direct intake at the bottom of a pond full of leaves, a grille placed upstream stops the coarsest debris, and the plate then receives only the fine particles.

💧 The rinse that protects the bacterial flora

A clogged plate is not cleaned thoroughly. It is squeezed out 2 or 3 times in a bucket of water taken from the tank, then put back in place still grey: this removes the excess sludge without washing away the bacterial film, whereas a full clean would force the colony to rebuild itself. Watch the outlet flow of your filter rather than the calendar, and step in when it weakens. On a chamber with several partitions, treat only one per session and leave 2 to 3 weeks before the next, so that part of the microbial population always remains intact in the circuit. The mechanism is explained in the article on the nitrogen cycle.

🌿 The homemade settling tank

In aquaponics, filtration is built more often than it is bought: a tank, two partitions, and the water passing from one compartment to the next before it reaches the crops. A sheet of this size lets you build these filtering partitions to the dimensions of the tank you have, which no off-the-shelf cartridge allows. Place it on the first compartment, the one that receives the water from the fish tank, and keep the loose media for the following compartments. The solids then stay in front of the sheet, where you can remove them easily, and the roots of your crops receive water that no longer carries sediment, which reduces blockages in the channels and distribution lines. Thread a loop of string through the partition when you cut it, so you can lift it out without emptying the tank at every maintenance session. The equipment and the start-up of a complete system are described in the guide on getting started with an aquaponic system.

Cutting sheet or loose spheres?

Two ways of filling the same chamber, only one of which takes the shape of what you have built.

A sheet can be cut to size, spheres can be poured One takes the exact shape of your room. The others fill any volume without tools.
