Sinking pellets with 42% protein for freshwater aquarium cichlids

These ProNovo Cichlid Grano M pellets feed the cichlids of a freshwater aquarium. Salmon meal tops the ingredients list and shrimp meal features at 15%, ahead of soy, wheat gluten and rice. The pellet sinks rather than floating at the surface, which brings it down to the level where most cichlids stay, and the recipe is enriched with vitamins A, D3, E and C.

🦐 Shrimp and krill

The animal base of the recipe, salmon, shrimp and krill, provides the 42% protein, and the krill meal also supplies natural astaxanthin, a pigment that maintains the reds and oranges of the fish's colouring. Specific dietary fibres, which the fish cannot digest, feed the beneficial bacteria in its gut, which makes this a so-called prebiotic formula.

An animal-based formula

Salmon, 15% shrimp and krill provide most of the protein.

Mediterranean herbs

They appear at the end of the list and make up the plant-based part of the recipe.

They feed the fish's gut flora rather than the fish itself.

🫙 The dispenser and the ration

The lid of the tub carries a dispenser that releases the same amount of pellets every time, which keeps your portion identical from one meal to the next. Feed what your cichlids eat in a few minutes, 1 to 2 times a day, then look at the bottom of the tank, because an uneaten sinking pellet breaks down on the sand instead of staying visible at the surface. With 8% fat, the formula oxidises on contact with air once the tub is opened: close it after each feed and keep it dry, away from light.

A tablet for the bottom-dwelling fish in the tank

If herbivorous catfish share the tank with your cichlids, add the food for cleaner fish to your order. These sinking tablets contain wood fibre and 11 % cellulose, which matches the diet of a fish that grazes on the decor. Given after the lights go out, they stay within reach of the bottom-dwelling fish, which are active at night.

The newer filter before the feed ration

If your filter is new, do not increase the ration all at once when switching to this food. A young filter takes several days to adapt to a heavier nitrogen load, and this delay shows up on a nitrite test: as long as nitrite is still measurable, the ration stays the same.

💧 Nitrogen and the filter

With 42% protein, this feed also brings a high nitrogen load for an aquarium. Your fish release ammonium, the filter converts it into nitrite and then nitrate, and your plants consume that nitrate. In an aquaponic aquarium, the cultivated area should therefore be set according to what you feed. Test the water with an ammonium test in the days following a change of feed, as described in the article on the nitrogen cycle.
