The EHEIM air pump oxygenates the water of an aquarium or tank through one or two diffusers, supplied with the pipe and non-return valves. It comes in three models: 100 L/h for a tank of up to about 100 L, 2 x 100 L/h for 100 to 250 L, and 400 L/h for large tanks.

Dissolved oxygen is the resource that your fish, the filter bacteria and the roots all share. In a stocked, heated or covered tank, exchange at the surface is no longer enough to renew it, especially at night and during hot weather. An air pump connected to a diffuser produces bubbles that stir the water and multiply these exchanges. The EHEIM air arrives complete in its box, with the pipe, the diffusers, the non-return valves and the means to fix it in place, so all that is left for you to do is plug it in.

🫧 Three flow rates, one principle

The air 100 delivers 100 L/h through a single outlet and comes with 1 m of tubing, a diffuser and a non-return valve. The air 200 splits 200 L/h across two outlets of 100 L/h, adjustable separately, with 2 m of tubing, two diffusers, two valves and a Y-fitting. The air 400 doubles the output again, with 400 L/h across two outlets and the same equipment as the air 200, which lets you aerate a large tank or two neighbouring tanks. All three models push air down to a depth of 2 m, use 3.5 to 4 W and suit both freshwater and seawater.

A bar diffuser for a deep tank

In a long or deep fish tank, a single round diffuser concentrates the bubbles in one spot. The 25 cm air diffuser bar, placed on the bottom, spreads the bubbling along its whole length and stirs a wider volume of water. With the air 200 or the air 400, you can run a bar on the bottom of the tank and keep the original diffuser for a settling chamber or a second tank.

The valves supplied, if the pump sits lower than the water

If the pump sits below the water level, a power cut can allow water to flow back down the pipe to it. Fit the supplied non-return valve on each pipe, with the arrow pointing towards the tank, to prevent this backflow. Preferably, place the pump above the water level.

🔇 Designed for a living room

An air pump runs day and night, often in a living room or bedroom, and its noise matters as much as its output. The EHEIM air sits on rubber feet that absorb the vibrations of the diaphragm, and a hook lets you hang it from the edge of the cabinet or the glass, so that it touches no surface that would amplify the sound. The airflow is adjusted at the pump, which lets you adapt it to your fish: a gentle flow for a fry tank, a stronger one for a tank of adult fish.

The diffusers supplied are fitted with a replaceable felt pad, which produces fine, regular bubbles. The finer the bubbles, the greater their contact surface with the water, but the more they restrict the air: a very fine diffuser placed at the bottom of a deep tank reduces the actual flow. If you replace the original diffusers, check that the pump still gives a steady stream of bubbles at the chosen depth.

📏 Choosing and installing

The volume of your tank gives the first guide, the depth the second. In a 200-litre aquaponics fish tank, 50 cm deep and connected to a grow bed, the air 200 supplies two diffusers, one at the bottom of the tank, the other in the settling tank, with the flow set on each outlet. For two 150-litre tanks side by side, the air 400 supplies one diffuser in each with plenty of margin, and for a 60-litre fry or quarantine tank, the air 100 is enough. Beyond two outlets, a tap and T or Y fittings distribute the air between several diffusers.

Maintenance is simple: rinse the diffusers every month or every 2 months, as limescale and biofilm gradually clog them and cause the flow to drop, then replace their felt pads once they no longer produce their original stream of bubbles. The pump diaphragm wears slowly, and a drop in flow despite clean diffusers tells you it is time to replace it. Place the pump somewhere dry and well ventilated, never in a closed cabinet where humidity builds up.

In aquaponics, dissolved oxygen determines the health of the fish, the activity of the nitrifying bacteria and the vigour of the roots. An air pump in the fish tank provides a safety margin, particularly in summer, when warm water holds less oxygen, and at night, when the plants stop producing it.
