The Nelumbo lutea is the only lotus native to North America, found in the marshes and slow backwaters of the eastern and central United States. It is not a cultivar but a botanical species, as shown by its flower, a clear yellow, up to 30 cm across, without the extra rows of petals seen in horticultural varieties.

🌊 A marsh plant

Its exceptionally wide water-depth range makes it the lotus of the shallow end. Where other varieties need 30 cm or more, this one is happy at a pond ledge or a flooded marginal zone, without sacrificing its height. If your pond is irregular, with shelves and shallow areas, you will find a spot for it where other cultivars would struggle. That also makes it a great choice for a pond whose level fluctuates through the season, a situation where a depth-fussy lotus ends up suffering on one side or the other.

🧺 A rhizome to contain

This vigour comes with a drawback. The rhizome is spreading and travels far through soft ground, to the point of colonising a loose-bottomed pond in a few seasons. Plant it in a crate or a basket, even in open ground, and you will keep its spread under control. A slatted basket lined with hessian works perfectly, as it allows water through while containing the rhizome. This is in fact the right approach for the entire aquatic plants range, and it prevents a great deal of laborious digging out a few years down the line.

What causes this seedling to fail

A seed that has not been filed enough will remain closed indefinitely, as a lotus husk is waterproof by design. Soaking water below 20 °C will equally fail to trigger anything, and a seedling immediately submerged under 30 cm of water will exhaust itself before reaching the light. All three causes are covered on the page dedicated to germination failure, and they account for the vast majority of lost packets.

Sow indoors before planting out

Soaking requires water kept between 20 and 25 °C for around ten days, which an April room cannot reliably guarantee. A seedling heat mat placed under the container solves this for the entire packet. Plan ahead for aquatic plant fertiliser tablets for the second season, as a lotus established in a grow bed quickly exhausts the little that garden soil contains.

🐟 Foliage and fish

On an installation with fish, upright foliage plays a different role from that of a water lily, as it shades the water without closing off the surface. The leaves are held up in the air rather than lying flat, so you keep the gas exchange between water and atmosphere while losing less light at depth. The roots, meanwhile, take up nitrate and phosphorus, making it as much a filtration plant as an ornamental one.

🌱 Species or cultivar

The choice between a botanical species and a horticultural cultivar is not simply a matter of flower appearance. A species comes true from seed, meaning that seeds collected from your plants will produce comparable Nelumbo lutea, whereas a cultivar produces variable offspring. A species is also generally hardier and less demanding, at the cost of a simpler flower and a vigour that needs to be kept in check. If you are looking for a spectacular bloom, a double cultivar will suit you better; if you want a plant that establishes itself durably in a pond, this is the safer choice.

Can the spreading rhizome take over a pond?

Yes, on an open mud base. The rhizome of this species spreads far horizontally and colonises soft substrates season after season. This is what makes it such a resilient marginal plant, and what causes problems in a small naturalistic pond.

What you need to know

Always plant in a container or basket, even in a pond with an earth base. The rhizome of this species spreads extensively, and pulling it out of a silty bottom after three seasons is a task you only ever want to do once.
Place the container in shallow water in the first year. Fifteen centimetres is sufficient; the water warms more quickly there and the young plant reaches the surface without exhausting itself.
Allow a seed pod to ripen at the end of summer. This species self-seeds reliably, giving you a stock of seeds for future years without needing to buy more.
Keep a file to hand throughout the soaking period. Seeds that have not cracked after three days are not dead — they simply have not been scored deeply enough.
Never drain the pond for winter. A lotus rhizome exposed to open air will dry out within a few hours and will not regrow in spring.
Keep an eye on stem height on a pond exposed to wind. The large parasol-like leaves act as a sail and the stems lay over, without the plant suffering any lasting harm.
