Pink sacred lotus for sowing, stems 90 to 180 cm tall, for ponds
The sacred lotus is the classic form of the genus, the one found in Asian ponds and traditional depictions. Its round leaves don't float; they stand upright above the surface on a stiff stem, sometimes reaching 1.50 m, with the pink flower rising even higher. It's this vertical habit that distinguishes a lotus from a water lily, long before colour comes into it.

The depth
Water depth ranges from 15 to 45 cm above the grow medium, and is reached gradually.
The container
The container measures at least 60 cm in diameter and is placed on the pond floor or on a shelf ledge.
The light
The lotus requires 6 to 8 hours of direct sunlight, with no shade cast by trees.
The heat
The water must reach 21 to 24 °C in summer, an essential condition for flowering.
🌡️ Heat before the date
A lotus is managed by temperature, not by the calendar. The water in the soaking glass must be kept at 20 to 25 °C for the shell to crack, and the pond water must reach around twenty degrees before growth can begin. Without scarification, nothing germinates
A lotus seed has an impermeable shell that can remain intact for centuries, which is precisely what has made the species famous. None of your seeds will germinate if you simply soak them as they are. File one side until the creamy white of the interior shows through, without cutting into the kernel, then soak in warm water changed daily. Swelling is visible within 48 hours, and the radicle emerges between the third and tenth day.
A heat mat for seedlings, fertiliser afterwards
If your room is cool in spring, add a seedling heat mat to your order along with the seeds. It keeps the soaking water at the temperature needed to crack the shell, whereas a seedling left by a cold window may simply fail to germinate. For the second season, once the rhizome starts to spread, aquatic plant fertiliser tablets pushed into the grow medium take over.
Transplanting takes place when the seedling has two or three leaves, before the roots become tangled inside the glass. Choose a wide container with no drainage holes, filled with heavy garden soil topped with 2 cm of gravel to prevent silt from clouding the water. Barely press the germinated seed in, leaves pointing upward, and submerge the whole thing under just a few centimetres of water. The depth is then gradually increased over the following weeks as the stems grow taller, until the final height is reached.
🪷 Lotus or water lily
Confusion is rife in the trade, and it has real consequences in a pond. A lotus grows out of the water, takes up volume vertically, and needs warm water to flower, whereas a water lily stays flat on the surface, covers a greater area, and tolerates cooler water. A small pond exposed to wind suits the latter better, while a large sheltered pond in full sun shows the former at its best. ❄️ The rhizome in winter
The sacred lotus tolerates cold provided its rhizome does not freeze, which depends on depth rather than latitude. In a pond where only the surface freezes, the container simply sits at the deepest point and overwinters there without any intervention. In a terrace tub, which freezes all the way through, the container is brought indoors to a frost-free cellar or garage, with the grow medium kept just moist. The leaves die back and are cut in autumn, and nothing reappears until the water warms up properly the following spring, often well after the other plants in the pond.

What you need to know
- File the seed on the correct side. The seed has a small nub at one end and a hollow at the other: it is the nub you work on. The hollow houses the embryo, and filing into it destroys the seed.
- Don't substitute patience for warmth. Below 20 °C, the shell won't crack at all — not more slowly, simply not at all.
- Choose your container before sowing. A lotus transplants very poorly, and a plant started in a pot that is too small loses an entire season when you move it.
- Lower the container in stages of ten centimetres at a time, never more, and only when the leaves are clearly above the surface.
- Keep the plant well away from waterfalls and pump outlets. The large leaves act like sails — they flatten in choppy water and the flower stems end up broken.
- Leave a seed pod to ripen at the end of summer if you want to collect your own seeds. They can be sown the following season using exactly the same method.
