The Newa Mirror UVC 18 W is a steriliser to be fitted on the circuit of an external filter or a pump. Its mirror-polished aluminium reflector directs the UV-C rays towards the water, which comes out free of suspended algae.

It is suitable for an aquarium of 700 to 1,100 litres, freshwater or marine.

The summary

Crystal-clear water, and UV-C rays that are not wasted

Green or milky water comes from organisms too fine for a filter: single-celled algae and suspended bacteria, which pass through all foams. A UV-C steriliser treats them differently. The water flows past a lamp that emits type C ultraviolet rays, the ones that damage the DNA of micro-organisms and stop them from multiplying. Within a few days, the suspended algae disappear and the water regains its clarity. The Newa Mirror UVC 18 W is fitted on the circuit of an external filter or a pump, outside the aquarium, and is suitable for freshwater and seawater.

Its distinguishing feature is in its name. The lamp is surrounded by a double screen of mirror-polished aluminium, which sends back towards the water the rays that went in the wrong direction. In an ordinary steriliser, part of the light is lost in the plastic housing; here, it passes through the water a second time. The lamp is protected by a quartz tube, a glass that lets UV-C through, and the water follows a set path along this tube. It does not touch the plastic walls, which prevents them from yellowing and ageing under the rays.

💡 What a UV-C treats

The steriliser acts on what passes in front of the lamp, and only on that. It eliminates green water caused by suspended algae, reduces the free-floating bacteria that make water cloudy and milky, and limits the circulation of certain parasites and germs during their free-swimming phase in the water. It does not affect algae attached to the glass, plants or decor, nor the filter bacteria, which live in the filter media and not in the circulating water. It therefore replaces neither filtration nor maintenance: it complements them. For the same reason, switch it off for 2 days when you add live bacteria, such as Easy-Life EasyStart starter bacteria, or a treatment, which would be destroyed or degraded as they pass in front of the lamp.

Never look at the lamp while it is switched on

UV-C burns the eyes and skin. The Newa Mirror cuts the lamp automatically when the housing is opened, and an indicator light shows that it is working: that is the light to look at, never the lamp itself.

📏 Size and flow rate adjustment

The Newa Mirror 18 W is designed for an aquarium of 700 to 1,100 litres when it comes to clearing the water. Action on germs requires stronger exposure to the rays, and is limited to a volume of about 200 to 300 litres. A knob adjusts the flow of water through the unit: the clarification setting suits the green water of a large tank, while the sterilisation setting, where the UV-C action is strongest, suits a quarantine tank or a small volume. On an 800-litre aquarium whose water has turned green after a period of intense lighting, clarification makes the water clear within a few days. In all cases, place the steriliser after the mechanical filter, as water cleared of its particles lets the rays through better.

Measure the phosphates that feed green water

The steriliser eliminates suspended algae, but it removes neither the phosphates nor the nitrates that feed them. The PO4 phosphate drop test tells you whether your water contains enough of them for green water to return as soon as the lamp wears out or you switch it off during a treatment. With this reading, you can also act on the cause, through lighting duration, feeding or water changes.

🔧 Installing and maintaining

You fix the Newa Mirror to the floor or the wall using two brackets, with a quick attach and release system. Its flat shape lets you fit it under your aquarium cabinet, beside the external filter. A single pump is enough to feed it: that of the external filter, or a dedicated pump. The housing opens using safety levers, and a switch cuts the lamp as soon as it is opened. The water circuit does not need to be shut off to change the lamp. Even so, allow for a shut-off valve on each side of the unit: it lets you isolate it to clean the quartz tube, without draining the pipes or de-priming the pump. Finally, leave enough room in front of the housing to open it and slide out the lamp, and keep it away from water splashes and electrical sockets.

The lamp

The lamp should be changed after around 8 months of continuous use.

The quartz tube

The tube is wiped at every lamp change.

The seals

The seals are replaced along with the lamp to keep it watertight.

The indicator light

The indicator light shows at a glance that the lamp is working.

A UV-C lamp keeps shining long after it has lost its effectiveness: the visible light remains, but the UV-C rays weaken. That is why you replace it on a fixed date, not when it goes out. Note the date it was put into service on the housing. A deposit on the quartz tube has the same effect as a worn lamp, because it blocks the rays before the water: a wipe with a soft cloth at each change is enough to avoid it.

🌱 In aquaponics

An aquaponic fish tank exposed to light turns green easily, because the water is rich in nitrate and phosphate. A UV-C steriliser fitted on the return pipe to the tank keeps the water clear and lets you keep an eye on the fish. It does not deprive the plants of food, since it has no effect on the dissolved nutrient salts, and it spares the nitrifying bacteria living in the filter and in the grow medium of the growing beds. The article on cloudy water in aquaponics helps you tell green water from cloudy water, which are not treated in the same way.
