This 4-litre fabric pot, made of rot-proof polyester felt, lets air and water pass through its wall. Roots that reach the wall stop growing instead of circling round, which produces a more branched root system.

Measuring 15 x 15 x 20 cm, it fits the Ebb&Grow flood-and-drain table and suits young plants, herbs and cuttings.

The summary

  • What you receive: 5 or 10 black fabric pots of 4 L, depending on the pack chosen.
  • The principle: the porous wall stops the roots when they touch it, so they branch out instead of circling.
  • The size: 15 x 15 cm base and 20 cm high, holding 4 L of grow medium.
  • The grow media: clay pebbles, coconut fibre, light potting compost or a mix with perlite.

Flexible geotextile pot for seedlings, herbs, cuttings and ebb-and-flow tables

This 4 L fabric pot from the Garden HighPro brand, made of rot-proof polyester felt, is used to grow young plants, herbs and cuttings. Its porous wall stops the roots on contact, so they branch out instead of circling, thanks to air pruning. Measuring 15 x 15 x 20 cm, it holds 4 L of grow medium and fits the Ebb&Grow flood table.

In a rigid plastic pot, roots that touch the wall follow it and end up circling at the bottom of the pot, which hinders re-establishment when repotting. This fabric pot made of polyester felt behaves differently. When a root reaches its porous wall, its tip is exposed to the air and dries out, which stops it and triggers the formation of secondary roots. This phenomenon, known as air pruning, gives you a dense root ball that is evenly distributed throughout the whole volume.

🌬️ A wall that breathes

The wall also lets air through, which keeps the grow medium oxygenated and stops it staying waterlogged after heavy watering. Excess water drains away across the whole surface of the pot rather than through a few holes in the bottom. The polyester used is rot-proof, so the pot does not rot from constant contact with moisture, and you can reuse it for several seasons after a simple wash.

Filling the flood and drain table with its original pots

The 10-pot ebb and flow table uses these 4 L pots, set in its grow bed. The solution fills the bed on each cycle, soaks the grow medium through the porous wall, then drains away, which refreshes the air around the roots. The pack of 10 restocks a full table.

Needs watering more often than a rigid pot

A wall that breathes also lets water evaporate. In soil or compost, this pot dries out faster than a plastic pot, especially in midsummer or under a grow light. Check the moisture of the grow medium by hand every day, and use a saucer if the pot is placed indoors on a piece of furniture.

Young plants

A growth stage before final placement.

Herbs

Basil, parsley or chives on a window sill.

Cuttings

A branching root system before repotting.

Measuring 15 cm across and 20 cm high, it holds 4 litres of grow medium, a size suited to young tomato or pepper plants before planting out, to herbs and to strawberry plants. It can be filled with clay pebbles for hydroponics, or with coco fibre or light potting compost for conventional growing. When empty, it folds flat and takes up very little space.

Take 10 tomato plants transplanted at 3 weeks into these 4 L pots: they spend a month there, and their root ball, branched by air pruning, settles in smoothly when planted out in the ground or in a soilless system. The pack of 10 covers the whole batch, and you only need to turn one pot over to release each root ball intact.

🧼 Washing and storing the pots

At the end of the crop, empty the pot, brush off any roots still clinging to the felt, then wash it in lukewarm water, by hand or in a machine at a low temperature, without fabric softener. Leave it to dry completely before storing it flat. A pot that has held a diseased plant should be disinfected before reuse, for example by soaking it in diluted hydrogen peroxide.

📦 Pack of 5 or 10

The pack of 5 suits a windowsill or a small batch of cuttings, while the pack of 10 suits a full ebb and flow table or a spring seedling sowing. For a light, airy grow medium that makes the most of the porous wall, the light peat-free potting compost works well, and you can enrich it as the crop develops with a fertiliser suited to the plants' growth stage.
