Aquael Oxyboost Plus aquarium air pump, 1 or 2 outlets
This Aquael Oxyboost Plus aquarium air pump comes in two versions. The AP-100 Plus delivers 100 L/h through one outlet, for tanks under 100 litres.
The AP-200 Plus delivers 2 × 100 L/h through two outlets, for tanks of 150 to 200 litres, and pushes air 10 cm deeper.
The summary
- What you receive: the air pump, with one or two 4/6 mm outlets depending on the version.
- How to choose: one outlet under 100 litres, two outlets for 150 to 200 litres.
- How deep the air is pushed: 60 cm on the AP-100 Plus, 70 cm on the AP-200 Plus.
- Where to put it: above the water level, or with a non-return valve.
Two aquarium air pumps that differ in their number of outlets
The Aquael Oxyboost Plus aquarium air pump comes in two versions. The AP-100 Plus pushes 100 L/h through one outlet for tanks under 100 litres. The AP-200 Plus delivers 2 x 100 L/h through two outlets for tanks of 150 to 200 litres, and pushes air down to 70 cm below the surface, against 60 cm.
This Aquael aquarium air pump comes in two versions. The AP-100 Plus blows 100 litres of air per hour from one outlet, for a tank of under 100 litres; the AP-200 Plus blows 100 litres per hour twice over from two independent outlets, for a tank of 150 to 200 litres. The second therefore does not send more air per outlet: it adds a second diffusion point and pushes the air 10 cm deeper.
AP-100 Plus, one outlet
It blows 100 litres of air per hour at 2.2 W and pushes air down to 60 cm below the surface.
AP-200 Plus, two outlets
It delivers 2 times 100 litres of air per hour for 2.5 W and pushes air out down to 70 cm below the surface.
🫧 Two columns of bubbles
In a 150-litre tank, a single column of bubbles draws the water towards the surface over a narrow area and leaves a poorly circulated corner at the other end. Two well-placed columns circulate the whole volume, and this circulation takes care of oxygenation, because oxygen passes from the air into the water mainly at the surface, which the bubbles agitate as they reach it, far more than at the contact of the bubbles themselves. The two-outlet version also lets you supply two neighbouring tanks, or a tank and an airlift filter, with a single unit.
📏 60 or 70 cm deep
The maximum delivery head is 60 cm on the AP-100 Plus and 70 cm on the AP-200 Plus: beyond this depth, the pump can no longer push the air out of the diffuser. Measure the water depth between the bottom of your tank and the surface, then allow for the resistance of a fine diffuser or a long pipe, which use up part of this margin. For a deeper tank, a pump designed to deliver at a greater depth is needed.
An air pump sits above the water
Store the pump above the water level rather than in the closed cabinet under the tank. When switched off, a pump placed lower than the surface fills with water through its own pipe, which then acts as a siphon. If you cannot place it higher, fit a non-return valve on each outlet in use.
An air stone on every outlet
The 30 mm round air stone slides straight onto the 4/6 mm tubing of this pump and turns the airflow into a cloud of fine bubbles. On the AP-200 Plus, one stone per outlet gives you two circulation zones at either end of the tank. The finer the stone, the more it restricts the air: near the 60 or 70 cm limit, check that the bubbling is still strong.
🔇 Fitting and noise
These pumps work through the vibration of a diaphragm, and the humming they produce depends mainly on what they stand on: placed on a hollow board or on a lid, they turn it into a sound box. A square of foam or a folded towel slipped underneath noticeably reduces the noise, which lets you leave the aeration running at night. Finally, connect the pipe and its diffuser before switching the unit on, and check that the outlet is neither pinched nor blocked.
🐟 On a small aquaponic circuit
In an indoor aquaponic circuit, dissolved oxygen is shared between the fish, the biofilter bacteria, which consume it to convert ammonia, and the roots of the crops. The AP-200 Plus lets you supply the fish tank from one outlet and a deep-water grow bed from the other, provided you stay within 70 cm of water depth. The nitrogen cycle in aquaponics explains why this consumption rises with the fish load, and a 25 cm diffuser bar spreads the air along the whole length of a grow bed.
