Sets of edible wild plants and bee-friendly plants, from dandelion to watercress

These sets bring together plants that are usually picked along country paths and that you can grow in your garden to have them close at hand. The set of 8 contains dandelion, greater nettle, mallow, buck's-horn plantain, watercress, common oregano, chamomile and St John's wort; the set of 15 adds, among others, wild garlic, hyssop, borage, valerian and purple coneflower.

🌾 Plants to pick at home

Most of these plants are edible. The young leaves of dandelion and buck's-horn plantain can be served in salads, nettle can be cooked into soup and watercress can be eaten raw, while mallow and borage flowers make a plate look beautiful. Others are better suited to herbal teas, such as chamomile, or to the flower bed, such as echinacea and hyssop, which are very popular with bees. By sowing them yourself, you know exactly what you are picking, and your plants grow well away from roadsides and chemical treatments.

Wild garlic is easily mistaken for lily of the valley

Every spring, serious poisonings occur after people pick leaves of lily of the valley or meadow saffron mistaken for wild garlic, and Anses (the French health and safety agency) regularly reminds people of this risk. In the box of 15, the wild garlic therefore needs a separate bed, well away from any lily of the valley or meadow saffron, and you should harvest only from that bed, which you have sown yourself and identified from the moment the seedlings emerge.

🌱 Very different emergence rates

These species are not all sown in the same way. Chamomile, St John's wort, stinging nettle, dandelion and watercress germinate in light: their seeds are placed on the surface and pressed down without being covered. Mallow and borage, which are larger, are covered with about 1 cm of soil. Finally, wild garlic only comes up after a long spell of cold, damp conditions, often a whole winter, so you sow it in autumn where it is to grow, in partial shade under a tree or a hedge.

One tray per species for staggered germination

These plants do not germinate at the same pace or under the same conditions, and sowing them all together leaves the slower ones smothered by the faster ones. The germination kits with 6 or 10 trays give each species its own 12-cell tray, with a watertight base and a vented lid. You can thus bring each one on at its own pace, then plant out into the garden plugs that are already well formed, in the spot that suits them.

Poor emergence does not mean the seeds are dead, since many of these species germinate in staggered fashion, with only a fraction of the batch coming up in the first year: this strategy allows a wild plant to survive a drought or a late frost that would wipe out an entire generation. So leave your seedlings where they are and watch them over two seasons before passing judgement, rather than resowing in September on a seedling bed that looks like a failure.

💧 Watercress kept separate

Watercress is a running-water plant, the only one in the set that is not grown in ordinary garden soil. It needs permanently waterlogged ground, a planter standing in a saucer that is always full, or the edge of a pond. It is also among the plants that thrive in aquaponics, in a grow bed where water circulates constantly and where its stems root at every node. Sow it on the surface of a compost kept moist, then move the young plants into the water as soon as they have a few leaves; our article on plants to grow in aquaponics will help you plan a bed.

🏡 A place for every plant

Each species has its own preferences, and grouping them according to their needs works better than mixing them in the same bed. Stinging nettle and wild garlic like rich, cool soil in partial shade, whereas oregano, hyssop and St John's wort prefer dry, poor, sunny ground. Most are perennials and self-seed, and stinging nettle also spreads by its underground stems: reserve a dedicated corner or a large container for it. Store unsown packets somewhere dry, cool and out of the light, and the article on germination failures will help if seedlings are slow to appear.
