Plagron Terra Bloom is a liquid mineral flowering fertiliser with an NPK analysis of 2-2-4, for fruiting vegetables grown in soil or potting compost: tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes, strawberries. It takes over from the growth fertiliser at the first flowers, at 5 ml per litre at most, at every watering.
The summary
- Formula: liquid mineral fertiliser NPK 2-2-4, twice as rich in potassium as in nitrogen.
- Full dose: 50 ml per 10-litre watering can, at every watering.
- Starting: at the first flowers, or in the fourth week on pre-fertilised compost.
- Vegetables concerned: tomatoes, peppers, aubergines, courgettes, cucumbers and strawberries.
- Beside the pond: for pots on the terrace, never in the fish water.
- Ready solution: 4 days in a clean, stirred tank, pH checked before use.
Feeding potted tomatoes, peppers and strawberries from the first flower to harvest
Plagron Terra Bloom is a mineral flowering fertiliser, NPK 2-2-4, sold in sizes from 1 to 20 litres for tomatoes, peppers and strawberries grown in soil. It follows Terra Grow at the first flowers, at 5 ml per litre at most. Its solution keeps for 4 days and must never be poured into an aquaponic system.
A tomato that is flowering has different needs. It has finished building most of its foliage and is starting to form fruit, which mainly demands potassium, the element that supports swelling and ripening, and phosphorus for flowering itself. Terra Bloom, from the Dutch brand Plagron, supports this transition with an NPK analysis of 2-2-4, that is 2.1% nitrogen, 1.7% P2O5 and 3.8% K2O, in mineral form, and therefore directly absorbed by the roots from the first watering.
This concentrated formula partly corrects the pH and conductivity of the solution by itself, but tap water varies too much from one area to another to rely on it entirely. So you measure the pH of the ready solution, which you set between 5.5 and 6.5, and you adapt the conductivity to the species and its stage, going by the look of the leaves rather than a single figure. Terra Bloom suits all soil mixes and all watering systems, from the watering can to drip irrigation, and can be combined with other liquid fertilisers and additives.
🍅 From flower bud to harvest
Terra Bloom starts at the beginning of flowering and continues with every watering until the end of the crop. On your fruiting vegetables, this starting point is easy to spot: the first yellow clusters on the tomato, the star-shaped flowers of the pepper, the first female flower of the courgette, the flower stalks of the strawberry. If your plants are growing in a compost supplied already enriched with fertiliser, that compost will keep feeding them for a few weeks, and the switch to Terra Bloom can wait until the reserve runs out.
Dose
Pour in 5 ml per litre of water at most, after shaking the bottle.
Frequency
The feed is repeated at every watering, throughout flowering and fruiting.
Target pH
The ready-made solution should be checked and adjusted to between 5.5 and 6.5.
Storage
A prepared solution keeps for 4 days in a clean tank.
Do not store the solution together with an organic product
A Terra Bloom solution should not be stored mixed with an organic product, which can turn it after 48 hours. Prepare this type of mix at the time of watering, and clean the tank before each new preparation. Store the container closed, out of reach of children.
Adjust the pH of the solution with an electronic tester
The recommended pH, from 5.5 to 6.5, should be checked on the ready-to-use solution, because the fertiliser changes the pH of the tap water. An AMTRA electronic pH tester gives the reading in a few seconds, and a pH- corrector brings it back into range if your water is hard. A solution at the right pH keeps all its potassium and phosphorus available for the developing fruit.
Prepared without any organic product, the solution keeps for 4 days, so you can fill a tank for several waterings in quick succession. Its pH does tend to creep upwards over time, however: check it before each use, and keep the water moving, for example with a small circulation pump, in a clean, covered tank. A drip irrigation line fed from this tank can then feed the tomatoes in a greenhouse without any daily mixing.
🌱 In pots, alongside aquaponics
Terra Bloom is intended for soil and pots, and its concentrated salts must never be poured into the fish water of an aquaponic circuit. In the grow bed, fruiting is managed differently. The FAO advises feeding 50 to 80 g of fish feed per square metre of fruiting vegetables per day, compared with 40 to 50 g for leafy vegetables, and it is this balance between the fish and the cultivated area that feeds the system's tomatoes.
Potassium, which is often lacking at fruiting time, is added to the circuit through a potassium base, potassium carbonate or hydroxide, which the FAO specifically recommends to encourage flowering, fruit set and ripening in fruiting plants. A potassium test tells you when to step in. Terra Bloom keeps its place on tomatoes, peppers or strawberries in pots on the patio, beside the system, provided their drainage water does not reach the pond. The article on growing tomatoes in aquaponics details the other levers of the grow bed.
📦 Pack sizes
At 5 ml per litre, the 1 litre bottle makes up 200 litres of irrigation water, enough to feed a few pots of tomatoes or strawberries through the season. The 5 and 10 litre containers make up 1,000 and 2,000 litres, for a vegetable garden in raised beds or a small greenhouse, and the 20 litre one makes 4,000 litres, for a greenhouse run on drip irrigation. If you have fed growth with Terra Grow, the growth formula from the same range, Terra Bloom replaces it entirely from flowering onwards.
Lettuces, spinach and herbs, which are harvested as leaves before any flowering, stay on the growth formula throughout their whole cycle, because nitrogen is more useful to them than potassium. On a terrace where tomatoes and lettuces grow side by side, you therefore prepare two separate watering cans, each dosed at 5 ml per litre at most, and keep the pH of both solutions within the same range.
📅 The flowering calendar
The 100% TERRA growing schedule gives the doses for 10 litres of water, at every watering. In a light potting mix such as Lightmix, Terra Bloom comes in from the third week at 50 ml per 10 litres, which is the full dose of 5 ml per litre. In a pre-fertilised mix such as Growmix, it starts a week later, in the fourth week, at the same dose. In the sixth week, when Green Sensation joins the watering can at 10 ml per 10 litres, the dose drops to 40 ml, then rises back to 45 ml in the seventh. It then returns to 50 ml until the tenth week. The target conductivity rises gradually from 1.6 to 2.0 mS/cm, tap water included, without ever exceeding 3.0. Sugar Royal supports flowering at 10 ml per 10 litres, and the final week is done with plain water before the harvest.
