Hobby's Aqualon wool is a fully synthetic filter wadding. Placed last in the filter, it traps the fine particles that cloud the water and also serves as a support for bacteria.
It is sold in bags of 100 g, 250 g, 500 g or 1 kg.
The summary
- Which capacity: from 100 g to 1 kg.

Synthetic wadding that traps fine particles at the filter outlet
Water can be perfectly healthy and still look slightly hazy. That haze comes from particles so fine that they pass straight through the foams and biological media. To catch them, you need a tightly woven material placed just before the water returns to the tank. That is the job of Hobby Aqualon filter wool, an entirely synthetic wadding that can be cut and packed to fit any filter, in freshwater and marine set-ups alike. The bag lets you take just the amount you need at each change.
🧶 Where to place it
The wool always goes last in the direction of water flow, after the mechanical and biological media. Placed first, it would clog within a few days under the coarse debris. Spread an even layer, without packing it too tightly, and without leaving any gap against the walls: water always takes the easiest path, and a single slit is enough to bypass the filtration. Rinse it in lukewarm water before first use to remove loose fibres. A layer of 2 to 3 cm is enough in most aquarium filters.
100 g
This pouch fills the last basket of an aquarium filter about 6 times.
250 g
This pouch lasts nearly a year for a medium-sized aquarium.
500 g
This bag fits several filters, or one large filter for more than a year.
1 kg
This bag suits a pond filter or the settling tank of an aquaponic system.
Take an external aquarium filter for a 200-litre tank, whose last basket holds a layer of wool of about 15 g. Replaced every 2 to 3 weeks, this layer uses around 300 g a year, so the 500 g bag lasts more than a year. If you fit out the settling chamber of an aquaponic system, where the wool is changed more often, the 1 kg bag works out cheaper per gram.
A coarse-mesh foam in front of the wool
A wool used on its own also catches the large debris and clogs within a few days. The JBL blue coarse filter foam, cut to the shape of the first compartment, first traps leftover food and leaves. Your wool then only receives the fine particles, and you change it far less often.
Never use quilting wadding
Do not use wadding sold for stuffing or decoration: it often contains treatments or glues that have no place in the water your fish live in. Only filter wool, like this one, belongs in a filter.
Wool is combined with the filter's other media. A classic sequence, in the direction of the water flow, starts with a ceramic medium, such as the EHEIM MECH pre-filtration noodles, or with a coarse foam to catch debris, continues with a biological medium, then finishes with the wool. In an internal filter with a single cartridge, a thin layer of wool wrapped around the foam is enough to clarify the water, provided you change it often. In a pond filter with compartments, the wool goes in the last compartment, in a basket or a filter bag, so that it can be removed easily without tearing.
🔄 When to replace it
Wool clogs faster than other media, since it traps the finest particles, and this rapid clogging is normal. Change it when the filter's flow drops noticeably or when it has turned a uniform brown. It can be rinsed in water from the tank and reused once or twice, but fresh wool always filters better. After a medication treatment, always replace it, because it retains some of the residues. As it is changed often, it carries only a small part of the filter's bacteria: renewing it does not upset the biological balance, as long as the other media stay in place.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, clear water is not just a matter of looks: fine particles end up clogging the roots and the grow media. A layer of wool after the settling tank protects the gutters and vertical towers. The guide on cloudy water in aquaponics helps you find the cause of a persistent haze. If your system grows on clay pebble beds, the grow medium already retains some of the particles; the wool is most useful in front of NFT gutters and towers, whose narrow channels block up quickly.
