💧 Three ways to humidify

In water

The tray sits on the water in the collector and the roots draw directly by contact. It is the most direct method.

On perlite

A compostable cellulose fibre spreads moisture evenly across the entire surface and retains small seeds.

On gel

A potassium-based absorbent gel, certified for food contact, maintains a constant moisture level.

Your choice depends on seed size. A large seed sits comfortably on its own in the tray and is happy with water from the collector, whereas a fine seed tends to slip and benefits from resting on a support that holds it in place. Temperature, however, applies equally to all three methods: you need 18 to 24 °C, which is typical of an ordinary kitchen. 🔄 Two trays, two dates

If you start both dishes on the same day, you get two harvests at once, then a gap of 6 to 10 days. Staggering them by 3 or 4 days changes everything, since the second dish is ready just as the first is finished and your table never runs dry. The regrowth option extends the cycle further, a dish placed back in contact with water after an initial cut will sprout again from the same seeds, giving a shorter and less abundant yield but without the need for fresh sowing.

Two ranges rather than one

Order the organic sprouting seeds in the same order, choosing two different varieties to make the most of the two trays. Sown 3 or 4 days apart, they give you two flavours taking turns on the table. A packet covers several successive sowings, so two varieties bought together will last you far longer than two packets of the same.

The water level that drowns the seeds

The collector receives the water and the tray makes contact with it, but does not sit submerged in it. A water level that covers the seeds suffocates them before they germinate, and this is the primary cause of a tray that rots rather than sprouts. The lid, meanwhile, should be removed after 48 hours, leaving it in place beyond that maintains a confined environment where mould can establish itself overnight.

🍳 The right moment to harvest

Cut 1 cm above the seeds, not flush with them, so that the seed casings stay on the tray rather than ending up on your plate and your shoots keep better. Allow 6 to 10 days between sowing and this step, following the 48 hours spent under the lid provided. Around 5 g of seeds per tray, roughly a level teaspoon, covers the surface without overcrowding it. A clean pair of kitchen scissors works perfectly well, and a clean cut will keep for 2 to 3 days in the fridge in a sealed container, beyond which the shoots soften and lose their appeal.

🧼 Between two seedlings

Cleaning between cycles is not simply a matter of good practice, it determines the outcome of the next sowing. Residual seed husks and the film that settles on the bottom of the collector harbour the spores that will cause the following tray to fail, and two minutes with soapy water or diluted white vinegar is all it takes to eliminate them. Dry both trays and the collector thoroughly before reassembling rather than stacking them while still damp. Used perlite goes to the compost after each cycle, while the gel and the trays can be reused indefinitely, keeping consumables down to the seeds alone. For a piece of equipment intended to produce food every week, this one maintenance habit is what separates a germinator used for years from one put away after three failed attempts.
