This bioactive powder works against filamentous algae and sludge, with no copper or zinc oxide. It is spread over the whole surface of the pond, with no prior dilution.

The dose is calculated in square metres, not litres: 50 g per m². The 500 g tub covers 10 m², and the 1 kg tub covers 20.

The summary

  • What you receive: a bioactive powder for spreading, in a 500 g or 1 kg tub.
  • The measurement that matters: the surface area of your pond in square metres, not its volume in litres.
  • Dosage: 50 grams per square metre, 2 applications a month for treatment, 1 a month for maintenance.
  • The method: spread it undiluted, leave it to work for at least 30 minutes, then remove what has come to the surface.
  • Surface area or volume: two cleaners, two ways of calculating the dose and two schedules.
  • Shipping: small parcel, with postage calculated at the basket according to your destination.

Bioactive powder against filamentous algae, dosed at 50 grams per square metre

The Kido Cleaning Pond filamentous algae treatment is a bioactive powder that tackles filamentous algae and sludge, with no copper or zinc oxide. It is dosed at 50 g per m² of surface area, not by water volume. A 500 g tub therefore covers 10 m², and a 1 kg tub covers 20.

This bioactive powder tackles filamentous algae and speeds up sludge reduction, with no copper or zinc oxide. It is scattered as it is over the surface of the pond, with no prior dilution, and it takes effect within half an hour. Our guide to filamentous algae in ponds explains why they so often return in the warmer months.

📐 A dose per square metre

Dosing by surface area is what sets this product apart, and it is the point to check before the first treatment. The dose is 50 grams per square metre of surface, not per cubic metre of water. You therefore only need the length and width of your pond: 4 metres by 3 makes 12 square metres, or 600 grams per treatment. Depth plays no part in the calculation, which spares you from estimating it on an uneven bottom. This basis of calculation is not that of the shock cleaner, which is dosed by volume: do not carry the figure from one over to the other. The 500 gram tub covers 10 square metres, the 1 kilo tub covers 20.

As a treatment

Allow 2 treatments a month for as long as the filaments keep coming back, at the full dose.

For maintenance

One visit a month is enough, once the situation is back under control.

In calm weather

Spread it when there is no wind or rain, otherwise the powder blows away before it reaches the water.

Measuring phosphates when the filamentous algae come back

Filaments that reappear after every treatment often point to nutrient-rich water, particularly high in phosphates. A drop-based phosphate test tells you whether this is the case in your pond, and a repeat measurement after the curative treatments shows how the level is changing. If it stays high, the article on pond algae in summer sets out the causes to deal with alongside the filaments.

🕒 30 minutes, then the landing net

Leave it to work for at least 30 minutes before removing the debris that has risen to the surface. This removal is part of the treatment: organic matter that sinks back to the bottom decomposes in the water and feeds new algae, so the next treatment would have more to deal with. A wide-mesh landing net removes mats of filaments in just a few movements.

Close the tub after each use, as the powder keeps for 24 months at between 10 and 25 °C, away from damp, which means you can keep what is left for the following season. If your pond is heavily affected and you want to take back control in one go, the active oxygen shock cleaner works differently: it is dosed by volume and brings the organic matter to the surface within a few hours.

📦 Choosing the pot

The quantity required can be read straight from the surface area. A pond measuring 4 metres by 3, or 12 square metres, takes 600 grams per treatment: the 1 kg tub therefore covers one full treatment with 400 grams left over, while a month of curative treatment, at 2 treatments, calls for 1.2 kg. For a pond with curved edges, break the surface down into rectangles, measure each one and add up the results. The 500 g tub is enough for one treatment on 10 square metres at most, or for the monthly maintenance of a small water feature.

Two ways to recover filamentous algae

One is dosed by volume and works within a few hours, the other is dosed by surface area and has to be repeated.

Surface or volume, the real difference One is calculated from the length and width. The other requires knowing the average depth, which not every pond lets you determine.
