This mineral powder raises the carbonate hardness, or KH, of the pond water: 25 g per 1,000 litres increases it by 1 to 2 °dH. A sufficient KH stabilises the pH, supports biological filtration and protects your fish from sudden swings.

The summary

  • What it is: a mineral extract in powder form that raises the carbonate hardness, or KH, of the pond water.
  • The dose: 25 g per 1,000 litres raises the KH by 1 to 2 °dH, with 24 hours between two applications.
  • The target value: a KH of 8 to 12 °dH, which protects the pH from sudden drops.
  • Which tub: 400 g for 4 doses on 4,000 L, 1 kg for 4 doses on 10,000 L.

Mineral powder that raises and stabilises the carbonate hardness of pond water

Carbonate hardness, written KH, measures the amount of carbonates and bicarbonates dissolved in the water. These ions make up the pond's buffering capacity: they neutralise the acids produced by life in the pond and stop the pH from dropping. Yet KH falls continuously, used up by the bacteria in the filter and diluted by rain. This mineral powder, rich in trace elements, raises it gently, dose by dose, up to the range of 8 to 12 °dH where the water stays stable.

🌧️ Why KH drops

Two phenomena lower the KH of a pond, and they add up. Nitrification, first, turns the fish's ammonia into nitrate while releasing acidity, which the carbonates neutralise as they are used up. Rain, second, brings water almost devoid of carbonates, so that a summer storm or a rainy autumn dilutes the pond's buffer. When the KH becomes too low, the pH can plunge overnight, which fish tolerate badly, and the activity of the filter bacteria slows. A KH test after heavy rain and during dry spells tells you whether a correction is needed, and the 6-in-1 pond water test kit measures it along with the pH on the same sample.

KH below 4 °dH

The pH becomes unstable and can drop suddenly, especially after heavy rain.

KH of 8 to 12 °dH

This is the target range: the pH stays stable and nitrification carries on normally.

After the rain

Rainwater, almost free of carbonates, dilutes the buffer and lowers the KH.

During a drought

Evaporation and top-ups change the composition of the water, which is why regular testing is useful.

🥄 The dose and the method

One measuring scoop of 25 g per 1,000 litres raises the KH by 1 to 2 °dH, depending on the composition of your water. For a 4,000-litre pond, you therefore add 100 g per dose. Dissolve the dose in a bucket or watering can of lukewarm water, then spread it over the whole surface, avoiding pouring it near the fish. Wait at least 24 hours before the next dose, and measure the KH and pH before each one. If your pH is already high, correct it first, as the product adds carbonates that push it upwards.

Raising the KH in 24-hour stages

Never pour in several doses at once to reach the target value more quickly. A sudden change in water chemistry stresses fish more than the low value itself. Proceed in steps of 1 to 2 °dH, one per day at most, and test the water between doses.

Measure the KH before correcting it

The dose is decided from a measurement, never by guesswork. The KH drop test kit gives the value in a few minutes, one drop per degree, and tells you how many steps remain to be taken. Do it before each addition, then once a month when the value is back in the target range.

🌱 KH in aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, nitrification runs at full tilt, since all the nitrogen from the fish has to become nitrate for the plants. KH therefore falls faster than in an ornamental pond, and its drop pulls the pH down with it, which eventually slows the filter bacteria. A regular supply of carbonates maintains this buffer, which in aquaponics you aim to keep between 6 and 12 °dH, a wider range than in a pond, for a pH held between 6.4 and 7.5. Raise the KH in small doses and measure the pH the day after each addition. The guide to regulating pH in aquaponics details this monitoring.
