Rockwool cubes for seedlings, 2 or 2.5 cm
These sheets of rockwool cubes get your seedlings and cuttings off to a start in batches: 150 cubes of 2 cm, or 50 cubes of 2.5 cm with a pre-drilled sowing hole. Mineral wool holds water well and keeps a stable pH.
Once the seedlings have emerged, each cube is potted on whole, into any grow medium you like.
The summary
- What you receive: one tray of 150 rockwool cubes measuring 2 cm, or 50 cubes measuring 2.5 cm, pre-drilled for the seed.
- What they offer: reliable water retention, a stable pH and low conductivity.
- After germination: the cube is potted on whole, into any receiving grow medium.
- Handling: wear gloves, as rockwool is a mechanical irritant.
Mineral plugs of 2 or 2.5 cm, inert, for sowing in succession
The 2 or 2.5 cm rockwool cubes for seedlings are used to start seedlings and cuttings in batches: one sheet has 150 cubes of 2 cm or 50 cubes of 2.5 cm, pre-drilled for the seed. An inert grow medium, mineral wool retains water well and keeps a stable pH. Each cube is transplanted whole, into any receiving grow medium.
The cubes come lined up in a tray, 150 cubes of 2 cm or 50 cubes of 2.5 cm. This is the format to choose if you sow in batches rather than by the handful, and if each of your seedlings needs to be able to move on by itself, with its root ball, to its final position.
🧱 A mineral, inert plug
Mineral wool feeds nothing and does not decompose. It retains water well, keeps a stable pH and a low conductivity, so that everything your seedling receives comes entirely from the solution you pour on. The 2 cm cubes have a 99% dry matter content and meet standard NF U 44-551 on growing media.
A 2 cm cube is enough to take a seed through to its first true leaves, with a plug firm enough to handle. The 2.5 cm cube, 3 cm tall and with a sowing hole, gives the plug a larger volume and also takes cuttings. The cube is then transplanted whole, into a pot of potting compost, into a grow basket or into a larger cube, without ever being opened, since the roots pass through it and carry on into the receiving grow medium.
The gloves, and the tray that is drying
Mineral wool is a mechanical irritant: its fibres prick the skin and lodge under the fingernails. Wear gloves whenever you separate cubes, even for a handful. Moisten the tray before sowing and keep it damp until germination, then place it in a domed tray if your room is dry.
🌱 From germination to transplanting
Germination speed depends first on the temperature of the cube. A lettuce seed germinates in about 3 days at 20 °C, against 7 days at 10 °C, so a tray left in a cool room falls behind even though nothing has been done wrong. The seedling moves to a new container at the stage of 2 to 4 true leaves, with roots visible beneath the cube, that is 3 to 4 weeks after sowing for a salad or herb. To harvest without a break, sow a new row every 2 weeks, if you have the space, then transplant in small batches rather than all at once, as the guide to successful spring seedlings explains.
A slotted basket to hold each cube
At transplanting, the cube slips as it is into a 5 cm perforated growing pot, whose walls let the roots reach through to the solution. You then wedge the cube with a few clay pebbles, which keeps it upright while the roots lengthen. The plant thus moves from the seed tray to a tower, a gutter or a bed without ever leaving its plug, and it suffers no uprooting.
🔁 The cube in a water circuit
In aquaponics as in hydroponics, the inert nature of rockwool is exactly what you want from it, since nothing leaches into the water with the plant. The cube, transplanted into a net pot, joins a bed of clay pebbles, a channel or a vertical growing tower, and stays there until harvest. Nutrition comes from the fish water or from your complete fertiliser, once the seed has used up its reserves and the first true leaves unfold.
