An aquarium filter circulates water through media that trap waste and carry the beneficial bacteria. The external canister filter, placed in the cabinet, holds the largest volume of media and suits medium and large aquariums as well as indoor aquaponic tanks. The internal filter attaches inside the tank and is enough for small volumes; the hang-on-back filter clips over the rim and can be serviced without dismantling anything.
Choose a filter whose flow rate turns over the tank volume three to five times per hour. Replacement media are in Filter media, and hoses and taps in Pipework & plumbing.
