Dissolved oxygen determines the health of the fish and the activity of the bacteria in the filter. Choose an air pump by its output, but also by its pressure: this is what sets the depth at which air still comes out, one millibar being roughly one centimetre of water. The EHEIM AIR 1000 aerator, for example, pushes 1,000 L of air per hour down to a depth of 2.8 m, using 8.5 W.
For aquariums, JBL ProAir pumps range from 60 L/h, for a 40 to 120 L tank, to 600 L/h, for 200 to 800 L. For ponds, kits combine the pump, the tubing and the diffusers, porous air stones, discs or microporous hoses that break up the air. Two pieces of equipment cover power cuts: the Amtra backup pump, which starts automatically when the power fails and runs for up to 20 h on its battery, and the Söchting Oxydator oxygenator, which works without electricity. A non-return valve protects a pump placed below the water level. Since warm water holds less oxygen, the article Looking after your aquaponic system in summer details the seasonal precautions.
