Coco fibre mat to cut to size, for lining a basket or a slatted planter

It is a coco fibre felt, supplied in a roll, which you cut to the shape of your container. It does not replace a grow medium, it forms the lining, between what you are planting and whatever sits behind it.

🪣 What a coco fibre wall takes care of

A hanging basket, a slatted planter, or an open-sided trough all allow the grow medium to wash out with every watering. The fleece liner sits between them and solves the problem without blocking drainage. Its interlocking fibres hold the material in place while letting liquid pass through, and the gaps maintain air circulation around the roots. Watering intervals increase because the fibre absorbs and then redistributes moisture, even in a container holding very little grow medium.

🧵 Cutting and installation

Cutting is done with scissors or a craft knife, and the edge doesn't fray, so you can cut to the exact size you need. No specialist tools are required, and a single roll will line several containers of different sizes, keeping offcuts to a minimum. Dampen the felt slightly before fitting, it becomes pliable and follows curved shapes without creasing or cracking. The same approach works in an aquaponic system, where felt placed at the bottom of a growing bed or pot retains fine particles that would otherwise reach the strainer and the pump, while still allowing the nutrient solution to flow freely. Felt for the wall, fibre for the volume

In a hanging basket, the liner forms the wall and compacted coco fibre provides the volume in which the roots develop, so both are worth buying together. A handful of clay pebbles at the base improves drainage and prevents the pocket of stagnant water that forms at the lowest point of a deep basket.

Placed dry, and cut too short

Dry liner fabric tears when folded and leaves open corners through which the grow medium escapes, so pre-moistening is not a refinement, it is a necessity. Cut generously too, and leave a few centimetres overhanging the top of the container, trimming back afterwards if needed. The offcuts are useful for filling the corners of a round net pot, where a single piece cannot follow the curve.

⏳ How long it lasts

A coir liner does not last forever, and that is something to factor in from the moment you buy it. Exposed to sunlight and repeated wet-dry cycles, the fibre typically breaks down after two to three seasons in a hanging basket, and slightly faster on a south-facing wall. The first sign is a crumbling top edge that exposes the grow medium, well before the base gives way. There is nothing to stop you doubling the thickness at the most exposed spots, or replacing just the upper ring while keeping the base in place, since the fabric can be cut to any shape.

🌿 Planting through the wall

A hanging basket looks its best when trailing plants spill out from the sides as well, and the liner is no obstacle to this. Cut cross-shaped slits of three to four centimetres at mid-height, once the liner is in place and the container is half filled, then slide the root ball from the outside inwards, protecting it with a paper cone. Press the fibre back around the collar, it naturally springs back and closes the opening. Make these slits before finishing the filling, because trying to plant through the sides of an already-full basket means taking everything out again. Plan for three to five openings evenly spaced around the basket for an even result, and choose trailing species for these positions that will tolerate growing horizontally during the first few weeks.
