Clay pebbles 50 L for hydroponics and aquaponics
These expanded clay pebbles of 8 to 20 mm form a lightweight, porous medium that keeps roots both moist and well aerated. They can be washed and reused from one crop to the next.
The 50-litre bag fills an aquaponic grow bed, a flood-and-drain table or several hydroponic pots.
The summary
- What you receive: a 50-litre bag of expanded clay pebbles, 8 to 20 mm grade, weighing 19.5 kg.
- Where to use them: hydroponic pots, flood-and-drain tables, gutters, aquaponic grow beds, and pot drainage layers.
- Before adding water: rinse with clean water, then check the pH in a glass of water at pH 6.
- How to choose: the comparison tool shows how they compare to the 6- and 10-litre bags in the shop.
Reusable mineral grow medium for hydroponic pots, channels and aquaponic grow beds
These expanded clay pebbles form the base grow medium for soil-free cultivation: they anchor the roots, allow free movement of air and water, and never break down. Their size of 8 to 20 mm leaves wide enough gaps between them for excellent drainage, while their porous structure retains some moisture. Use them on their own in a hydroponic pot, flood-and-drain table or aquaponic grow bed, or mix them with soil to improve aeration.
🌱 What the clay pebbles provide
Each pebble is a clay body fired at high temperature, whose outer shell encloses a mass of pores. Water coats their surface and penetrates those pores, whilst the spaces between the pebbles remain filled with air: your roots therefore have constant access to both moisture and oxygen, which limits diseases associated with waterlogging. The material is inert, meaning all nutrition comes from the solution you supply. Unlike rockwool, it can be mixed into garden soil without any risk of contamination, and it is fully recyclable.
In a hydroponic pot
Clay pebbles fill reservoir pots and flood-and-drain tables, where their pores retain a little moisture between floods.
In a channel
They hold plants in place in the baskets of channel systems without retaining water at the collar.
In soil
At the bottom of a pot, beneath the compost, they ensure drainage, and mixed into heavy soil they lighten it.
🐟 The grow bed in aquaponics
In an aquaponic grow bed system, clay pebbles serve three roles at once. They support the plants, they retain solid fish waste, and their surface provides a home for the nitrifying bacteria that convert ammonia into nitrate, so the bed also acts as a biological filter. The 8 to 20 mm size is the one recommended for this purpose, at a depth of around 30 cm. If your grow bed measures 1 m by 50 cm, you will need 150 litres, that's three bags, and the 80-litre grow bed fills with two bags.
Check the pH of the clay pebbles before flooding
Fresh clay pebbles can raise the pH of your water, which interferes with iron uptake in plants. Drop a handful of pebbles into a glass of water adjusted to pH 6, leave them to soak, then measure with the pH drop test kit. If the reading reaches 7 or above, soak the pebbles overnight in water acidified with pH- adjuster, then rinse thoroughly. This way, you start your grow on a neutral grow medium.
Rinse the clay pebbles before first use
Transport leaves clay dust and fine grit in the bag. Rinse the clay pebbles in a large container until the water runs clear; if you skip this step, the dust will cloud the solution and settle throughout the circuit. The bag weighs 19.5 kg: empty it in several stages rather than all at once.
♻️ Rinse and reuse the clay pebbles
At the end of the growing cycle, remove the roots, wash the clay pebbles to remove any organic residue, then rinse them with clean water: they are ready to use again for the next season. If mineral deposits have formed, the grow medium regenerator will dissolve them before the final rinse. After an outbreak of insects, algae, or mould, disinfect the clay pebbles by soaking them overnight in water brought to pH 4 with a pH- corrector, then rinse thoroughly to remove all traces of acid.
📦 The 50-litre bag
The bag contains 50 litres of clay pebbles and weighs 19.5 kg, with dimensions of 67.5 x 45 x 17.5 cm. It is printed with the name Laterlite Agri, the Italian manufacturer of this expanded clay, sold in France under the name Grorox. The product is approved for organic farming, both indoors and outdoors. If you do not use it all at once, reseal the bag and store it somewhere dry: the clay pebbles are unaffected by frost or wet weather.
