Glazed clay beer slug trap
This glazed clay slug trap attracts slugs and snails with beer, without any pesticide. It covers about 10 m² and is placed at the edge of the growing area, with its base buried to a depth of 4 cm, to draw them away from young plants.
Its lid keeps about 0.75 litre of fresh beer for up to 5 days, even in the rain.
The summary
- What it is: a glazed clay beer trap, with its lid.

- What upkeep: 0.75 litre of beer, renewed every 5 days.
- Where to place it: outside the growing area, base buried to 4 cm.
Glazed clay beer reservoir, pesticide-free, for roughly 10 m²
This glazed clay slug trap controls the slugs and snails in your garden without any pesticide. You fill it with beer and close the lid, and the gastropods, drawn by the smell, go in and drown.
The smell of beer attracts slugs and snails within a radius of about 4 metres, and one trap covers roughly 10 square metres. The trap serves to draw slugs away from sensitive areas, such as young plants, the salad patch or a freshly planted border, rather than to protect one particular plant. That is why the trap is placed at the edge, and not in the middle of what you want to protect. Allow one trap for every ten or so square metres to be watched over, that is three traps for about thirty square metres of borders.
🍺 A covered beer reservoir
The lid
It caps the reserve, keeps the beer fresh for up to 5 days and stops rain from diluting it.
The notch
It marks the fill level, which is about 0.75 litres of beer.
Glazed clay
Made in Alsace, plastic-free, it rinses clean in a single motion between two fills.
Hedgehogs
The shape of the trap stops them reaching the beer and the drowned slugs.
🗺️ Where to place your traps
Place your trap outside the vegetable bed or growing area, at the foot of a shrub, in a flower border or along a hedge. Around a raised bed, two traps placed on either side are often enough. When the trap is full, empty its contents onto the compost heap, then refill it up to the notch. The trap only catches gastropods: against flying pests, an insect net placed over the crops takes over, and the integrated biological control collection brings together the other pesticide-free protections.
The compost receives what the trap has caught
Since the contents of the trap are emptied onto the compost, an in-ground worm composter installed in the vegetable garden lets you deal with everything on the spot. You empty the trap a couple of steps from where it sits, and what it has caught goes back to being material for the soil of your crops, with no bag and no trip to the bin.
Bring the trap in before the frosts
The enamel of the trap can be damaged by frost. At the end of autumn, dig it up, empty it, rinse it and store it in a dry, frost-free place until the following spring, lid included.
🌧️ The slug seasons
Slugs are mostly active at night, and their activity depends on the humidity of the air and the soil. Spring and autumn, which are milder and damper, are therefore the periods when they cause the most damage, whereas a dry summer drives them deep into the soil to avoid drying out. The most vulnerable stage for crops is the seedling stage, and a seedling that emerges slowly because of the cold stays exposed for longer. So set your traps before spring planting and sowing, then again at the first autumn rains, rather than when the leaves have already been nibbled.
🪴 Installation and beer
Dig a small hole and bury the base of the trap to a depth of 4 cm, so that the slugs can reach it from the ground through the side openings. Pour in the beer up to the notch, about 0.75 litre, then put on the lid. The lid keeps the beer fresh and attractive for up to 5 days, even in rainy weather, and that is the interval at which you renew it. Any light beer will do. In the middle of the wet season, a visit every 5 days is therefore enough: empty the trap onto the compost heap, rinse it, fill it again and put the lid back on.
📦 The delivery pitfall
The package contains the glazed trap, its glazed lid and an instruction leaflet. The trap is made in Alsace from clay taken from a local quarry, with no chemical additives, and it weighs 1.3 kg with a diameter of 10 cm and a height of 15 cm. It works without power, and its only upkeep is replacing the beer. It is also part of the discovery set, with a worm composter and an olla, which equips a vegetable garden in one go with three terracotta items.
