This JBL kit connects the aquarium's gravel cleaner to the sink tap via 8 m of pipe: the jet of tap water creates the suction that empties the tank and cleans the substrate, then a lever reverses the direction to refill it. No more buckets to carry, for an aquarium 30 to 70 cm high.

The summary

Drain, clean the substrate and refill the aquarium from the tap, without carrying a bucket

A partial water change usually means filling buckets, carrying them to the sink, then making the trip again with clean water. The JBL ProClean Aqua In-Out kit does away with these trips back and forth. A bell-shaped gravel cleaner goes into the aquarium, an 8 m pipe connects it to a small pump screwed onto the tap, and the pressure of the tap water is enough to create the suction.

💧 How the suction works

When you open the tap, the jet of water passes through the pump and creates suction in the pipe, which draws the water from the aquarium up to the sink, even if the sink sits higher than the tank. Depending on the position of your sink relative to the aquarium, the flow either carries on by itself once the pipe is full, or you need to leave the tap running throughout the water change, at a rate of roughly two volumes of tap water for every volume of aquarium water. The kit can therefore compensate for a height difference of up to 1 metre, provided the sink and the aquarium are on the same floor.

The pump screws directly onto the tap spout, via a 3/4-inch thread, and the supplied adapters cover M22, M24 and M28 spouts with a 1 mm pitch, which fit most kitchen taps. Before ordering, unscrew the aerator from your tap to check that it has a thread: a mixer tap with a pull-out spray head does not always have one, and the pump cannot then be attached to it.

🪣 Emptying and cleaning the substrate

The gravel cleaner bell is 27 to 46 cm long, which suits aquariums from 30 to 70 cm in height. Its round shape ends in a right angle: by turning it in the substrate, you create a swirl that lifts the dirt, and the angle reaches the corners of the tank. As on the JBL ProClean Aqua-Ex gravel cleaners, a removable strainer stops plants, shrimp and small fish at the mouth of the bell, and two clips hold the pipe to the edge of the aquarium as well as to the edge of the sink.

A magnet for the glass while the water level is low

A water change exposes the top of the glass, where algae cling most. A JBL Floaty II cleaning magnet cleans it from the outside while the level is low, without putting your hand in the tank. If its inner part comes loose, it floats and can be retrieved from the surface.

Take a 120-litre aquarium from which you change a quarter of the water each week. That means taking out 30 litres and putting back 30 litres, or six 10-litre buckets carried between the sink and the cabinet. With the kit, you stay by the aquarium: the gravel cleaner cleans the substrate while the water runs to the sink, then the tank refills through the same pipe, with no bucket to lift.

🚰 Filling through the same pipe

When the level has dropped enough, flip the pump lever: the tap water flows back into the pipe and fills the aquarium by the same route. Beforehand, adjust the mixer tap so that the water arrives at the tank's temperature, and add your water conditioner at the start of the refill if the mains water is chlorinated. The refill is thus done without a bucket, at a flow rate you control at the tap.

🌱 In aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, the fish water also feeds the plants, and the partial water change serves to remove the sludge that builds up at the bottom of the tank and to make up for evaporation. As this kit removes the need to carry buckets, the task becomes easier to keep up regularly. Do, however, measure the pH and hardness of your tap water before the first fill, because water that differs greatly from the system's water upsets the bacteria in the biofilter. In aquaponics, a pH of 6.4 to 7.5 and a KH of 6 to 12 °dH are the targets. The guide to regulating pH in aquaponics explains how to correct a deviation.
