Seed and cutting compost, 25 L bag
CANNA Terra Seed Mix is a seed and cutting compost with a uniform, stable structure that holds water well to give seeds good germination conditions. It takes vegetable seedlings and cuttings up to the two- or three-leaf stage, before transplanting into a pot, into soil or into a clay pebble bed.
The summary
- Its texture: a uniform seed-starting compost that keeps an even moisture around the seeds.
- How to sow: at a depth of 2 or 3 mm, in a pot of 5 cm at most, between 20 and 25 °C.
- The duration: until two or three true leaves, with a weak solution at EC 1.2.
- Towards aquaponics: the nursery for the plants that will later move to the grow bed.
A fine, stable compost for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings
CANNA Terra Seed Mix is a fine, stable compost for germinating seeds and rooting cuttings. Sow at a depth of 2 or 3 mm, at between 20 and 25 °C, then CANNA Start feeds the seedlings until transplanting, at two or three leaves. Before going into an aquaponic bed, the compost is removed from the roots.
A germinating seed needs three things: constant moisture, air around it and a grow medium fine enough for its first root to push in without effort. CANNA Terra Seed Mix is a starter compost formulated for this moment, and it is just as suitable for rooting cuttings. You use it to raise your tomatoes, lettuces, herbs and cabbages in the warm, until the young plants move into pots, the garden or an aquaponic system.
Its main quality lies in its homogeneous, stable structure. The particles are of even size, so the water spreads uniformly through the pot instead of forming waterlogged zones and dry pockets, and the mix does not slump over repeated misting. It holds water well, which gives you time between mistings and lets the seed soak up moisture and germinate without drying out. It has been designed to work with CANNA Start, the starter fertiliser from the same brand, and the bag carries the Dutch RHP label, which certifies the quality of growing media.
🌱 Sowing step by step
Fill your small pots without packing the compost down, moisten it, then place the seeds at a depth of 2 to 3 mm, never more than 5 mm: a seed buried too deep uses up its reserves before reaching the light. A pot no larger than 5 cm in diameter is enough, because a small volume of compost dries out and warms up evenly around a still tiny root. Mist the surface to keep it moist without waterlogging it, and keep the temperature between 20 and 25 °C, for example in a mini greenhouse placed near a source of gentle heat. Remove the lid as soon as the first seedlings emerge, to avoid the excess humidity that encourages damping off.

Getting seeds to sprout
Between 20 and 25 °C, with moist, misted compost, under the lid of a mini greenhouse.
Rear
Remove the lid at germination, give gentle light and a weak nutrient solution at EC 1.2.
Prick out
At the stage of two or three true leaves, when the roots hold the rootball together.
Strengthening seedling roots from emergence
The first few weeks determine the vigour of the future plant, and it is the root system that develops first. The root stimulator Rhizotonic, or Bio Rhizotonic for organic growing, added to the watering water for the young seedlings, supports this stage. Your young plants then reach transplanting with a firm root plug that can be handled without falling apart.
Keep young seedlings out of direct sunlight
A seedling that has just emerged has very tender tissues. Direct sun through a window or a powerful grow lamp placed too close can scorch them within hours. Give them plenty of gentle light for the first few days, then gradually increase the intensity.
Once the seedlings have emerged, you feed them with a weak solution, with a conductivity of about 1.2 mS/cm. Electrical conductivity, or EC, measures the quantity of dissolved nutrient salts: a low value protects the fine rootlets while avoiding deficiency. At the stage of two or three true leaves, the plants are transplanted into their final growing medium: compost, coco fibre, clay pebbles or rockwool. Cuttings follow the same path as soon as they have formed a good mass of fine roots. For outdoor growing, sowing directly into open ground works far less well: germinate indoors, then harden the plants off by putting them outside for a few hours a day on a balcony.
🐟 Seedlings for the aquaponic bed
An aquaponic grow bed is not a seed tray: its coarse grow medium, whether clay pebbles or gravel, holds a tiny seed poorly, and the flood cycle either shifts it or drowns it. So you raise your young plants separately, then transplant them into the system once they have rooted. Terra Seed Mix fills that nursery role for plants destined for a bed filled with pebbles. The FAO aquaponics manual illustrates the next step: the soil is removed from a lettuce's roots before it is transferred into the system, so that the organic medium does not clog the bed or cloud the fish water.
If you grow on deep water culture or in NFT channels, where the roots hang directly in the water, it is simpler to sow straight into germination sponges or rockwool cubes, which can be placed as they are in the net pot. In both cases, the nutrient solution given to the seedlings stays outside the system: gently rinse the root ball before installing it. The benefit of this nursery is also to produce continuously, by sowing small batches at regular intervals, the staggered planting that the FAO recommends to avoid uneven harvests. The article on spring seedlings in aquaponics offers a calendar.
📦 Capacity and storage
A cylindrical pot 5 cm across and 5 cm deep holds about 0.1 litre of compost. A 25-litre bag therefore fills nearly 250 pots, enough to see you through several seasons of seedlings for your family vegetable garden, or to supply the nursery of an aquaponic system for more than a year. With smaller module trays, the number of seedlings you can raise rises accordingly, which suits salads and herbs sown in large numbers.
Store the opened bag in a cool, dark place, at a temperature of at least 4 °C, and close it again so that it does not dry out. A seed compost that has frozen or dried out loses part of the fine, even structure that gives it its value for seeds. Before filling your pots, break up any lumps and moisten the compost lightly if it is very dry. The plastic packaging is fully recyclable.
