This flexible PVC pipe connects a pump, a filter or a steriliser to your tank, in an aquarium, a pond or an aquaponics system. Its grey, translucent tint lets you see the water flowing while limiting algae on the inside wall.

It is supplied in 2.5 m coils, in grey from 9/12 to 19/27 mm and in green in the 9/12 mm diameter.

The summary

  • What it is: a flexible, translucent PVC pipe, supplied in a 2.5 m coil, that carries water between a pump, a filter and a tank.
  • The four diameters: 9/12, 12/16, 16/22 and 19/27 mm, for outlets from 9 to 20 mm.
  • Which pipe for which outlet: the outlet of your pump or filter decides, and the first number of the pipe must fit snugly over it.
  • Grey or green: grey blocks some of the light that would turn the inside of the pipe green, and the 9/12 mm is also available in green.
  • How to choose: the 2.5 m coil suits short runs, while pipe by the metre suits long ones.
  • How it arrives: rolled into a coil in a small parcel, delivered to your door.

Translucent flexible pipe in a coil, for pump, filter and grow bed

Between a pump and a grow bed, or between an aquarium and its external filter, the water almost always travels through a flexible pipe. This one is made of translucent PVC, free of heavy metals, and is supplied in a 2.5 m coil that you cut to the length you need. Its four diameters, from 9/12 to 19/27 mm, match the most common families of fittings on aquarium pumps and filters, and you can use it in freshwater and in seawater.

🔬 Material and colour

The PVC of this pipe resists salt, acids and bases as well as ozone, so it copes with seawater or an acidified nutrient solution. Its colour plays a specific role: in a clear pipe, light encourages algae to grow on the inner wall, to the point of narrowing the bore. Translucent grey filters out part of that light and noticeably delays their appearance, while still letting you see the water flowing or an air bubble trapped inside. The 9/12 mm size is also available in translucent green, which blends into the look of your planted aquarium.

📏 Four diameters, four families of nozzles

A flexible pipe is designated by its inside diameter followed by its outside diameter, and it is the first that must fit snugly over the ribbed outlet of your pump or filter. The 9/12 mm takes the 9 to 10 mm outlets of small pumps and internal filters. The 12/16 mm fits the 12 to 13 mm outlets, those of pumps from 300 to 600 L/h such as the 600 L/h submersible pump with adjustable flow and of JBL CristalProfi e401 to e901 filters. The 16/22 mm suits 16 mm outlets, and the 19/27 mm takes the 19 to 20 mm outlets of water pumps from 1,000 to 2,000 L/h. A pipe that is too narrow slows the water through friction, and the pump then delivers less than expected at the top of the circuit.

A barbed tee to supply two tanks

If your pump has to fill two grow beds, the 20 mm ribbed tee splits the flow from the 19/27 mm pipe between two outlets, with no drilling or glue. Its three ridged ends take a pipe with an inner diameter of 18 to 20 mm, which matches the larger diameter of this coil. You cut the coil into three lengths, and each bed receives its share of the water from a single pump.

Tighten a clamp at each end

Under the pressure of a pump, a pipe can slip off its nozzle, all the more quickly when the water is warm. Fit a hose clip on each end that sits out of the water, and let the pipe hang down without pulling it taut. Also avoid bends that are too tight, because a pinched pipe reduces the flow and the back-pressure it creates upstream can blow a fitting off.

In aquaponics, this pipe most often connects the pump in the fish tank to the grow bed placed above it, from where the water flows back down by gravity. Keep this run short and direct, since every metre and every bend adds resistance that your pump has to overcome. A small system, with a 100-litre tank and a 600 L/h pump, is fine with the 12/16 mm. Once the pump reaches 1,000 L/h, the 16/22 or the 19/27 mm lets it deliver its full flow. A biofilm of bacteria also forms inside the pipe, which is normal in a living system. The guide to building your aquaponic system describes the complete set-up, from the pump to the grow bed.

🧽 Pipe maintenance

Rinse a new pipe in clean water before fitting it, to remove manufacturing and storage dust. When the flow drops without the pump being at fault, pass a 16 mm brush through the larger diameters, then rinse the pipe with tank water to protect the beneficial bacteria. Outdoors, run the pipe in the shade, because flexible PVC hardens in the sun and then holds less well on its connectors.

🧭 Ring, roll or diffuser pipe

This 2.5 m coil suits short runs, from a pump to a filter or from an aquarium to its grow bed. For a longer circuit, you can order the flexible PVC pipe by the metre cut to the exact length, in 14 x 18 mm clear or 18 x 22 mm opaque black. The porous air diffuser pipe, on the other hand, does not carry water: connected to an air pump, it releases bubbles along its whole length.
