The summary

Flocculant and enzymes that clear cloudy pond water

Aquatic Science Bio-Clear clarifier clears cloudy pond water by combining a flocculant, which clumps the particles together so the filter can catch them, with enzymes, which break down the organic matter responsible for the haze. The shock treatment is dosed at 100 ml per 10 m³, and the 500 ml bottle provides 5 doses.

Cloudy pond water can have two causes, which often combine: mineral or organic particles in suspension, and a load of dissolved organic matter that feeds a bacterial haze. A simple flocculant deals with the first, not the second. Aquatic Science's Bio-Clear combines both actions in a single bottle.

The flocculant clumps fine particles into larger flocs, which the filter retains. The enzymes pre-digest the organic nutrients responsible for the cloudiness and limit the formation of biofilm on the walls and stones. At the recommended doses, the product is harmless to fish and plants. It works in water at 14 °C at least: in spring, you therefore wait until the pond reaches this threshold before the first treatment.

🧪 Two dosages depending on the situation

For very cloudy water, the shock treatment is 100 ml per 10 m³. For maintenance, to keep the water clear throughout the season, the dose drops to 100 ml per 20 m³ every 15 days. Shake the bottle well, then spread the dose over the whole surface of the pond, with the filtration running. The 500 ml bottle therefore gives 5 shock treatments for a 10 m³ pond.

Shock treatment

Add 100 ml per 10 m³ of very cloudy water.

Maintenance

Add 100 ml for 20 m³, every 15 days in season.

Filter

Leave the filtration running throughout the treatment.

After a shock

Rinse the filter foams in pond water.

A UV steriliser against green water

Bio-Clear acts on particles and organic matter, whereas green water comes from microscopic algae that stay in suspension. If your pond turns green every summer, the EHEIM Clear UVC pond UV steriliser, placed after the pump, destroys these algae as the water passes through. The two devices complement each other: the clarifier deals with the milky haze, the UV lamp deals with the green.

In very hot weather, treat in the evening

The breakdown of organic matter consumes oxygen, while warm water already holds less. If the water exceeds 25 °C, treat in the evening and leave a waterfall or an air pump running overnight.

Take a pond of 8 m³ whose water turns milky in spring. A shock treatment of 80 ml clears the water, then you rinse the filter foams to remove the trapped flocs. After that, a maintenance dose of 40 ml every 15 days, from May to September, keeps the water clear. Over the season, the 500 ml bottle covers the shock treatment and nearly 10 maintenance doses.

🔍 When the cloudiness returns

If the cloudiness keeps coming back, look for the cause: an overstocked pond, too much food, an undersized filter or a bottom laden with sludge. Note the date and dose of each treatment: this record shows whether the cloudiness always returns at the same time of year, often after a large addition of food or heavy rain. The product keeps for 2 years, in a dry place, between 10 and 25 °C.

🌱 In aquaponics

In an aquaponic system, enzymes that break down organic matter are generally welcome, but a flocculant added to the water that irrigates the crops calls for caution: it is best reserved for stand-alone ornamental ponds. Cloudy water in aquaponics is first corrected with better mechanical filtration and a suitable feeding ration. Our guide to understanding and correcting cloudy water in aquaponics goes through the causes and the solutions.
