EHEIM reeflexUV and UV+e UV-C steriliser for aquariums
This UV-C steriliser is fitted in line on the circuit of an external filter or a pump, and reduces suspended algae, germs and bacteria. Five models cover tanks from 80 to 2,000 litres, in freshwater and seawater alike, and the reeflexUV+e version is controlled over Wi-Fi.
The summary
- What you receive: the steriliser with its tube fitted, its bracket, its ballast and 4 end fittings.
- For which tank: from 80 to 2,000 litres depending on the model, in freshwater as well as in seawater.
- Where it is fitted: on the outlet of an external filter or a circulation pump, in any direction.
- What flow rate: up to 3,000 L/h against green water, half that against germs.
- How to choose: the controlled version adds operating time ranges and a boost mode, without changing the treatment.
- What maintenance: the glass tube is cleaned every 3 months, the UV-C tube is replaced every 8,000 hours.
In-line germicidal unit, for aquariums from 80 to 2,000 L
The reeflexUV steriliser is fitted in line on the circuit of an external filter and passes the aquarium water in front of a UV-C tube. Five models cover tanks from 80 to 2,000 litres, in freshwater and in seawater, and four of them also come in a version controlled from a phone. You first choose the model according to the volume of your tank, then the control depending on whether or not you want to adjust the unit remotely.
💡 The reflector and direct flow
The interior of the aluminium body is polished and reflects the radiation back towards the water, which therefore receives it from several sides instead of just one. The water, for its part, takes no detour inside the housing: it runs along the tube without changing direction, and the pressure loss of baffled units disappears. Only the organisms floating in the current pass in front of the tube, and the dose they receive depends on the time they spend in front of it, which explains the two flow-rate ceilings for each model.
📐 Which model for which volume
The model is chosen first on the volume of water actually circulating in your system, then checked against the flow rate of the pump feeding it. The ranges of the five models overlap, so a 750-litre tank fits both the 800 and the 1500: the larger of the two accepts a higher flow rate, which matters if your EHEIM classic external filter or your pump delivers more than the smaller model can handle. Also check the height available in the cabinet, since the housings of the two largest models are 50 and 56 cm high.
reeflexUV 350
The smallest model covers tanks of 80 to 350 litres with a 7 W tube. It is not available in a controllable version.
reeflexUV 500 and 800
The 500 treats 300 to 500 litres with a 9 W tube, the 800 treats 400 to 800 litres with an 11 W tube.
reeflexUV 1500
The 1500 covers 700 to 1,500 litres with an 18 W tube, in a housing 500 mm tall.
reeflexUV 2000
The 2000 covers 1,200 to 2,000 litres with a 24 W tube, in a housing 560 mm high.
The housing switches the lamp off when opened
The unit switches its lamp off by itself as soon as the casing is opened, which protects you while the tube is being changed. Unplug the unit all the same, stop the filter or circulation pump and drain the line before you start, otherwise water will spill into the cabinet. Never power the tube outside its casing, because UV-C radiation damages the eyes and skin even at a low dose.
The spare tube to keep in reserve
The UV-C tube loses its germicidal power after 8,000 hours, which is roughly a year of continuous running. The replacement UV-C tube for reeflexUV, 7 to 24 W is available in all five power ratings of the range, and keeping one in reserve saves you from interrupting the treatment while waiting for a delivery. Choose the power rating of your model, which is printed on the housing.
🚰 The two permitted flow rates
Each model has two flow limits, and it is this pair that determines how you set your pump. Against a haze of algae or bacteria, the 350 accepts up to 400 litres per hour and the 2000 up to 3,000. Against germs and parasites at the infectious stage, these limits are halved, to 200 litres per hour on the 350 and 1,500 on the 2000. Water that passes more slowly stays longer under the radiation, and it is this contact time that separates clarifying from disinfecting. So you set the flow according to the result you are after.
Take a 600-litre tank fitted with an external filter pushing out 1,000 litres per hour, with a reeflexUV 800. Against green water, this flow stays below the ceiling of 1,200 litres per hour, and all the filter's water can pass through the unit. Against germs, the ceiling drops to 600 litres per hour: you then pass only part of the flow, by placing the unit on a bypass fitted with a tee and a valve, which lets you adjust the share of water sent past the tube. The rest of the flow returns to the tank untreated, and the equivalent of the tank's volume still passes in front of the lamp every hour.
📶 The Wi-Fi controlled version
Models 500, 800, 1500 and 2000 are also available in the reeflexUV+e version. The tube and the water treatment are identical, and the housing adds a Wi-Fi connection that lets you control the unit from a phone, tablet or computer. You can set run periods and pauses, and a boosted mode for periods of high parasite pressure. The 350 has no controllable equivalent. From one version to the other, only the way the unit is controlled changes.
🌱 UV and the filter's bacteria
In aquaponics, the question that keeps coming up concerns the biofilter: can a device that destroys bacteria coexist with your system, which lives off them? The radiation only reaches what floats freely in the current, and the colonies attached to the filter media and in the grow medium do not pass in front of the tube. The nitrogen cycle therefore carries on while the water clears. Place the device on the return, after mechanical and biological filtration, so that it treats water already cleared of its particles.
Iron additions call for particular care. Chelated iron is photodegradable: UV radiation breaks the bond between the iron and its chelating agent, and the released iron precipitates before reaching the roots. If you add 11% DTPA chelated iron, switch the unit off for 6 to 12 hours after each addition, long enough for the plants to take up the iron, then switch it back on. The app-controlled version lets you schedule this pause from your phone instead of unplugging the unit.
🧰 Fitting and routine maintenance
The box contains the unit with its UV-C tube already fitted, its mounting bracket and screws, the ballast with its power cable, and 4 connection nozzles, two for 12/16 mm pipe and two for 16/22 mm pipe. No mounting position or flow direction is imposed, which lets you fix the bracket however the cabinet allows. The water pressure must not exceed 0.8 bar, so the unit is placed on the outlet of a filter or a circulation pump. A double quick-connect valve on each side then lets you take it out of the line without draining the pipes, so you can clean the glass tube at least every 3 months or replace the UV-C tube after 8,000 hours of running.
