Three acids and organic buffers, to hold the pH steady rather than simply lower it

Terra Aquatica pH- is a liquid pH adjuster designed for hydroponics, coco fibre, and soil. It lowers the pH of a nutrient solution and, crucially, holds it there: it is a blend of three acids combined with organic buffers, not a bare acid. pH does not feed the plant, it determines what the plant can absorb, and that is the whole point. A perfectly dosed solution at pH 7.5 keeps iron, manganese, and phosphorus entirely out of reach of the roots: the plant shows deficiencies in the midst of plenty.

What sets this product apart from a DIY-grade acid

Adding acid to a reservoir brings the pH down, that much is straightforward. The problem comes afterwards: without any buffering capacity, the value drops sharply on addition, then rises again over the following hours due to the bicarbonates in the water and root activity. You correct it, it rises again, you correct again. This pH- is a blend of three acids combined with organic regulators: it is these that give the solution its inertia, and that keep an adjusted value stable for several days rather than just a few hours.

Vinegar, citric acid, and lemon juice all bring pH down effectively, nobody disputes that. The problem is that they are biodegradable: in a warm, oxygenated reservoir teeming with bacteria, they are carbon molecules, which is to say food. They are consumed within one to two days, the acidity they carried disappears with them, and pH climbs back to where it was. You end up correcting every two days, with the added drawback of increased oxygen consumption and a bacterial film on the walls.

Citric acid has a second, less visible effect: it is a chelating agent. It binds to the calcium and iron in the solution and alters their availability, disrupting the balance that the fertilisers had established. Adjusting pH should have no bearing on nutrition; with citrate, it does. A buffered mineral corrector does not degrade and does not enter into these reactions: what has been adjusted stays adjusted. Corrosive: gloves and goggles, no exceptions

The concentrate is classified H314, causing severe skin burns and serious eye damage, with a hazard statement. Its pH is 1. Never add water to acid, always add acid to a large volume of water, and never into a tank without circulation. Wear gloves and eye protection, and rinse immediately and thoroughly with water if contact occurs.

The method that saves you going back and forth

1. Always last

Fill up, add the fertilisers, mix, and only then adjust the pH. Each fertiliser shifts the value: correcting beforehand means correcting twice.

2. In small quantities

A few millilitres, twenty minutes of mixing, then re-measure. The buffer takes time to act: measuring too soon leads to over-correction.

3. Once and for all

With hard water, the first corrections consume the bicarbonates. Once that work is done, the value holds, and subsequent additions are minimal.

There is no per-litre dose for this product, and that is perfectly normal: the amount required depends entirely on the buffering capacity of your source water. Rainwater will drop with just a few drops; hard mains water may need ten times as much to achieve the same result. This is also why the hard water version of TriPart Micro exists: both problems stem from the same cause.

How much you need in practice

There is no fixed dose in millilitres per litre, and there cannot be: the quantity depends on the buffering capacity of your water, not on the volume being treated. That said, this quantity only needs to be measured once, and the result remains valid for as long as your water source stays the same.

The method comes down to four steps. Take 10 litres of your water as you use it, with fertiliser already dosed. Add the corrector using a graduated syringe, half a millilitre at a time, stirring and waiting a few minutes between each addition. Note the number of millilitres at the point where you reach your target, 6.0, for example. Then multiply by your tank volume divided by ten: 4 ml for 10 litres means 40 ml for a 100-litre tank.

The typical ranges, and they are just typical ranges, can be summed up in a sentence: rainwater or reverse-osmosis water will drop with just a few drops per 10 litres and you need to go very carefully, whereas noticeably hard tap water may need several millilitres for the same adjustment. Everything in between is possible, which is precisely why the measurement needs to be done at home. Bear in mind too that the first tanks will use more than subsequent ones, while the bicarbonates are being neutralised. pH must be measured, not estimated

A calibrated pH meter or a colorimetric test kit is essential: to the naked eye, a solution at 6.0 looks identical to one at 7.2, yet the difference in nutrient availability between the two is considerable. See the water analysis collection.

Target pH, crop by crop

A single target for the whole vegetable garden is an acceptable compromise, but you gain by adjusting it according to what is growing. Here are the typical ranges and what locks out first when you exceed them.

These ranges reflect the availability of elements in the water, not plant preferences. A crop does not suffer from the number itself, it suffers from what that number makes inaccessible.
