eSHa GASTROBAC treatment against slime disease
This treatment tackles slime disease, a bacterial infection that leaves a whitish film on the skin and gills of freshwater fish. The course lasts 3 days, and the 10 ml bottle treats 500 litres.
Shrimps, plants and the bacteria in the filter tolerate the treatment well. Snails should be removed from the tank before the course.
The summary
- What you receive: a 10 ml dropper bottle with its instructions for use.
- What it treats: the bacterial slime disease, that whitish film on the skin and gills.
- How long it takes: 3 days, with a dose that decreases from the first day to the third.
- What volume: 500 litres per bottle, for a full course of treatment.
- What stays in the tank: shrimps, plants and the bacteria in the filter. Snails must be removed.
- Dispatch: small bottle sent by tracked parcel, costs calculated at the basket.
Against the whitish film of slime disease, a 3-day course for 500 litres
eSHa GASTROBAC is a treatment for slime disease, a bacterial infection that leaves a whitish film on the skin and gills of freshwater fish. A 10 ml bottle treats 500 litres in a 3-day course, with 20 drops per 100 litres on the first day, then 10 and 10. Shrimp, plants and filter bacteria tolerate it, but snails do not.
This small 10 ml bottle treats slime disease, a bacterial infection of the mucus layer covering the skin and gills of your freshwater fish. It covers 500 litres for a full 3-day course, and it is also used as a preventive on plants or decor before introducing them to your tank.
On the fish
You can see a whitish, milky deposit on the flanks, and breathing that speeds up when the gills are affected.
On the decor
The same slimy substance also settles on the plants and on the objects in the tank, where it is easy to see.
What triggered it
A build-up of organic matter encourages infection: leftover food, dead leaves, a clogged filter.
🫙 The 3-day course
For 100 litres, use 20 drops on the first day, then 10 drops on the second and 10 on the third; a 60-litre tank therefore receives 12 drops, then 6 and 6, counted with the bottle's dropper. Beforehand, remove the activated carbon, resins, UV and oxidisers from the filter, as they absorb the product, and leave the pump running day and night. Use the first day to siphon the substrate and rinse the filter sponges in water from the tank, since it is the accumulated organic matter that favoured the infection and the bottle does not remove it.
Fresh activated carbon to finish the treatment
At the end of the 3 days, filtration through activated carbon removes the traces of product left in the water, before your snails go back into the tank. EHEIM activated carbon goes in a bag, in the filter basket, in place of the media removed before the treatment. The same step ends every eSHa treatment, since all of them require you to take the carbon out during the course and put it back afterwards.
🐚 What stays, what comes out
The treatment is well tolerated by fish, by shrimps, by plants and by the bacteria in the filter, which saves you from dismantling the tank for 3 days. Snails, however, cannot tolerate it: move your Neritina, ramshorn snails and apple snails into a bucket filled with water from the tank before the first drop. It is intended for freshwater ornamental fish and excludes animals raised for consumption, so the treatment should be carried out in an aquarium and not in a system whose produce you eat. The cause, however, is the same everywhere: an excessive organic load is corrected with a water check and maintenance of the substrate, in an aquarium as in aquaponics.
Preventive treatment is aimed at plants and decorations coming from another tank, since the slimy substance settles on these surfaces as well as on the fish and can thus enter your home with them. It is carried out before they are introduced, rather than waiting for an outbreak to appear in your aquarium. Once the course is finished and the carbon has been put back, the eSHa Optima tonic, given every day, supports the recovery of fish whose skin and gills have been affected.
🧭 Spotting the infection in time
The coating of slime disease is whitish and milky, and it follows the shape of the fish instead of forming separate spots. When the gills are affected, breathing speeds up, the fish becomes listless and stays near the filter outlet, where the water is most turbulent. As soon as you see these signs, start the course of treatment the same day, after removing the carbon and siphoning the substrate.
