Anaesthesia and sedation of ornamental fish, in a bath prepared separately
Narcomor Plus is a 100 ml bottle of phenoxyethanol, supplied with its dosing syringe, which anaesthetises or calms an ornamental freshwater or marine fish. It is used in a bath prepared separately, at a rate of 5 ml per 10 litres. Breathing slows within a few minutes, and normal activity returns just as quickly once the fish is back in the tank.
This 100 ml bottle contains phenoxyethanol, the active substance that sedates an ornamental fish for the duration of a procedure. It carries the mention of a medicine approved under animal welfare rules, and it covers freshwater as well as seawater. A dosing syringe comes with the bottle, because the quantities are counted in millilitres and not in capfuls. The product is used in three ways, which call for neither the same quantity nor the same duration: choose the one that matches your procedure before dosing.
The bath is prepared separately
The product is poured into a container filled with water from your aquarium or pond, and the fish is placed in it for the duration of the procedure. It must not be poured into the main aquarium. The product is for ornamental freshwater and saltwater fish, which excludes fish from a system whose produce you eat: on a food-producing installation, handling is done without any product, and fish health issues are addressed through diagnosis and water quality.
💤 What the product causes
In the bath, the fish's breathing slows within a few minutes. The fish stops struggling, which makes it possible to measure it, photograph it, move it from one tank to another or examine it closely. Once returned to its aquarium or its pond, it also recovers normal activity within a few minutes. At the anaesthetic dose, the effect is reversible, whereas the end-of-life dose, 3 times stronger, is not. You therefore control the effect obtained, provided that you calculate on the volume of your bath and not on that of your aquarium, and that you prepare what you are going to do before placing the fish in the bath.
📐 The three doses
All doses are calculated on the volume of the bath, at 0.5 ml per litre for anaesthesia. A bucket containing 4 litres of water from your tank therefore needs 2 ml, and a 20-litre transport tank, at the sedation dose, needs 2.5. The 100 ml bottle therefore covers 20 anaesthetics in 10-litre baths. Measure the water actually poured into the container rather than relying on its nominal capacity, because a 10-litre bucket filled to three quarters holds only 7.5 litres, and a dose calculated for 10 litres would be a third too strong.
Anaesthetise
Pour in 5 ml per 10 litres of aquarium or pond water, into the prepared bath.
Calming a transport
Dilute 5 ml in the same amount of water, then pour the mixture into 40 litres of transport water.
Ending a life early
Add 15 ml per 10 litres, and leave the fish in the bath for at least 30 minutes.
Aerate the wake-up bath with an air pump
Recovery takes place in well-aerated water, and this condition matters even more when the fish has received a slightly strong dose. An aquarium air pump connected to an air stone, switched on in the recovery container before the procedure, stirs the water and maintains its oxygen content throughout the procedure. This way you put the fish back into water that is ready, instead of looking for an air stone at the moment it needs one.
🩺 The revival bath
Once the procedure is over, the fish goes back into its aquarium, or into a container of clean, well-aerated water taken from the same tank, and resumes normal activity within a few minutes. If its breathing stays weak, or barely perceptible, the dose was too strong: place it straight away in this well-aerated recovery bath and encourage it to swim. The return of movement in the gill covers, the flaps that cover the gills, shows that breathing has recovered. Prepare this container before you begin, next to the anaesthetic bath, so that you have nothing to look for during the procedure.
🚚 Sedation during transport
For a journey, the dose stays low: 5 ml diluted in the same amount of water, then poured into 40 litres of transport water, which calms the fish within a few minutes without sedating them. Prepare this mixture just when filling the bag or tub, using water from the original pond or aquarium. On arrival, the treated transport water must not go back into the aquarium or the pond: transfer your fish with a net and discard this water, since it contains the product, which has no place in the water your fish live in.
🧰 The bottle and its syringe
The syringe is used to draw up the required amount, then to draw up the same amount of water before pushing the plunger to expel it all at once: the product is thus spread through the water instead of staying at the surface. Then store your bottle out of the reach of children. This bottle supports good husbandry and does not replace any treatment: when a fish is ill, what it needs is a targeted treatment, and a nitrite test will often reveal the source of the problem before you handle the fish at all.
