-50% on a selection of fish food
Fertiliser is not chosen the same way in aquaponics and in hydroponics. In aquaponics, the fish supply nitrogen and phosphorus; what remains is to top up what their feed provides little of, such as potassium, calcium and iron. That is the principle behind Aquaponic Mix, NPK 0-0-4, dosed at 0.5 ml per 10 L every day. Choose chelated iron according to the pH of the water: DTPA 11 % works from pH 4 to 7.5 without colouring the water, EDDHA 6 % holds up to pH 9 but tints the water red, and EDTA 13 % does not go beyond pH 6.5. DTPA is dosed at 18 g per 1,000 L to target 2 ppm of iron.
In hydroponics, the solution supplies everything. Two- or three-part nutrients, such as the TriPart range, separate growth, bloom and trace elements; in full vegetative growth, TriPart Grow is dosed at 1.8 ml per litre, with a pH of 5.5 to 6.5 in the reservoir. Formulas for coco coir, organic biostimulants and starter kits complete the range. To recognise a deficiency, the article Plant deficiencies in aquaponics describes the symptoms.
