Vermiculite holds 430 to 470 ml of water per litre and releases it slowly over time. This is what keeps your seedlings moist between waterings. It comes from mica, heated to around 1,000 °C until its layers expand accordion-like, which explains its lightness and water-retention properties.
🪨 What its figures are actually worth
A pH of 6 to 8 places this mineral close to neutral, which avoids disrupting the comfort zone of young roots. The conductivity of 2 mS/m is very low, meaning the material introduces no salts and will not skew the reading you take from your solution. Particle size covers 0.5 to 10 mm for 90% of the product, and the material meets standard NFU 44-551.
As a blend
Vermiculite makes up 20 to 50 % of compost volume, depending on the water requirements of the species being sown.
As a top dressing
A 5 to 10 mm layer spread over the seedling retains moisture in contact with the seeds.

🧽 Rinsing before transplanting
This is where this grow medium stands apart, when your plant needs to enter a water circuit. The flakes detach from the roots under a gentle stream of lukewarm water, with no need to scrape or pull. Your plants arrive clean in the channel or basket, and no organic matter enters with them. That is the difference from a seedling compost, whose fine particles end up at the strainer. The vermiculite and perlite combination
Combine it with perlite, which plays the opposite role by keeping air in the mix. Together they make a grow medium for seedlings that retains moisture without suffocating the roots, and you adjust the proportion of each depending on whether your mix compacts or dries out too quickly. Equal parts suit most seedlings, and you can increase the perlite for species that are sensitive to excess water.
Pure, and over a long crop
What makes vermiculite valuable at the seedling stage becomes a drawback later on. Used alone over a grow lasting several months, it retains too much water and the roots eventually become starved of air, so move your plant into a more open-structured medium at transplanting. Keep the bag sealed and stored somewhere dry, as ambient moisture causes the flakes to clump and makes the product difficult to measure out.
🧤 Handling the bag
A bag of vermiculite releases mineral dust when poured dry, and that is the only real inconvenience with this product. Dampen it slightly before mixing, with a watering can or a sprayer, and the cloud disappears without affecting its properties. Work outdoors or in a well-ventilated space for large volumes, and avoid stirring it vigorously near your face. Reseal the bag carefully afterwards, as vermiculite that has absorbed moisture from the air will compact and lose the looseness that makes it easy to incorporate.
