The summary

  • Formulation: a liquid organic additive with 18 amino acids, NPK 8.5-0-0, to be used alongside the base fertiliser.
  • Maximum rate: 1 ml per litre of water, at every watering, from the first or second week of growth.
  • Growing media: soil, potting compost and coco fibre, not hydroponic systems.
  • Outside the circuit: for pots of fruiting vegetables near the system, never in the fish water.

Support flowering and the flavour of tomatoes, strawberries and peppers grown in soil

Plagron Sugar Royal is an additive with 18 amino acids, NPK 8.5-0-0, that supports flowering and the flavour of fruiting vegetables in soil or on coco fibre. It is dosed at 1 ml per litre at most, in the watering with Terra Bloom until harvest, or as a foliar spray until the 3rd week of flowering. Never in aquaponics.

The flavour of a tomato or a strawberry is built during flowering and fruit ripening, when the plant converts its energy into sugars and aromatic compounds. Sugar Royal, from the Plagron range, is a liquid additive designed to support the plant throughout this process. You add it to your usual fertiliser for fruiting vegetables grown in soil or coco fibre, with the aim of supporting flowering and bringing out the natural flavour of the harvest.

Its organic formula is based on a blend of 18 amino acids, the basic building blocks from which the plant makes its proteins and enzymes. These amino acids carry the product's nitrogen, which is rated at 8.5% organic nitrogen, with no phosphorus or potassium. Your plant can absorb some of the amino acids directly through its roots or leaves, which spares it part of the synthesis work at a time when it is putting a lot of energy into its flowers. This is why Sugar Royal is used in very small amounts, as a supplement to feeding and never as a replacement for it.

🍓 Crops and calendar

Add 1 ml of Sugar Royal per litre of water at most, that is a dilution of one part per thousand, to the irrigation water that already contains your base fertiliser. Application begins from the first or second week of growth and continues at every watering until harvest. On your cherry tomatoes or strawberry plants, this means giving it from the well-established young plant right up to the last pickings. The TERRA growing schedule therefore keeps it at 10 ml per 10 litres until harvest, alongside the flowering fertiliser Terra Bloom. It can also be combined with the Green Sensation fruiting booster, which acts differently on flowering.

Fruiting vegetables

Tomatoes, peppers, chillies, aubergines and cucumbers, grown in pots or in open ground.

Soft fruit

Strawberries and melons, where flavour is the whole point of the harvest.

Aromatic herbs

Potted basil or mint, whose fragrant leaves you harvest.

Monitoring conductivity when nitrogen is added to the fertiliser

Sugar Royal supplies nitrogen on top of that from your base fertiliser, and excess nitrogen during flowering keeps the foliage going at the expense of the fruit. A pocket pH and EC tester lets you check the complete solution and the water draining from beneath the pot. If the conductivity rises from one week to the next, you slightly reduce the base fertiliser rather than the additive.

No more spraying on the flowers after the third week

Sugar Royal can be sprayed on the foliage early in the crop, but it must no longer be applied to the leaves and flowers after the third week of flowering, otherwise the flavour of the harvest may suffer. After that stage, use it only in the watering water.

Always shake the bottle before dosing, as a concentrated product based on organic ingredients can form a sediment. Prepare the watering solution just before use: a solution stored for several days can become cloudy and smelly through natural bacterial activity, with no harmful effect on the plants but no point in keeping it. Also watch the colour of the foliage during flowering. Very dark leaves and runaway growth signal an excess of nitrogen, which you correct on the base fertiliser.

💦 Watering or spraying

Watering remains the main method of application, since it goes with every feed and needs no extra step. Foliar spraying is best kept for the growth stage and the very start of flowering, when you want to give an established plant a boost. Spray in the late afternoon or evening, out of direct sunlight, onto dry foliage, so that the droplets do not scorch the leaves as they dry. If you water by drip irrigation, rinse the pipes with clean water after each use, as organic matter eventually builds up in the drippers.

🐟 Vegetable flavour and aquaponics

Sugar Royal suits mixes of compost and coco fibre, but it is not intended for hydroponic systems, whether nutrient film technique, deep water culture or aeroponics. It is therefore not used in a classic aquaponic system, where the same water bathes the roots and the fish, nor in a decoupled growing loop: its organic matter would load the water, and it must never go into the fish water. Its place is in the pots of compost that you set up beside the system, for fruiting vegetables that need a large root volume.

Within the system itself, the flavour and quality of your fruit depend first on an adequate supply of potassium, one of the elements most often lacking in aquaponics, along with calcium and iron. The aquaponics guide from New Mexico State University recommends supplying it as a hydroxide when the pH drops, and potassium bicarbonate plays the same buffering role while also feeding the plants. The article on growing tomatoes in aquaponics points out that variety, pollination and pruning also have a bearing on the harvest.

🧴 Sizes and storage

At 1 ml per litre, each millilitre prepares one litre of watering water. The 100 ml bottle therefore allows a trial on a few pots, the 250 ml bottle covers a balcony of tomatoes and strawberry plants for a season, and the litre is enough for a family greenhouse. The 5 to 20 litre containers, which prepare 5,000 to 20,000 litres, are aimed at commercial vegetable growing. Since the dose is low, choose a size that you will finish within one or two seasons.

Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from frost, heat and light, and out of the reach of children. Write the opening date on the label, and always prepare only the amount of watering solution you need that day, measuring the additive with a graduated syringe so as to respect the dilution to the nearest thousandth. A badly dosed watering can be made up for at the next one, but an error repeated every day ends up loading the grow medium with nitrogen, which the EC tester quickly reveals.
