These split coco fibre plugs hold a seed, the stem of a seedling or the base of a cutting in their slit. The plug retains moisture while letting air through, and the young plant is then transplanted along with it, into a basket, a pot or the ground.

The summary

Coconut fibre plugs, split to hold a seed, a seedling or a cutting

A split coco fibre plug is a small, soft plug, split across the top and down one side. The slit opens with a finger, then closes around whatever you place in it: a seed, the stem of a young plant or the base of a cutting. Coco fibre holds water while letting air through, and the roots grow through it until they emerge on the other side. You can later move the plant to a new support together with its plug, without disturbing it.

🌱 Three ways to start a seedling

To sow, moisten your plugs until they are soft, leave them to drain, then place one or two seeds in the slit, at a depth of 2 to 3 times their size. Very fine seeds, such as lettuce or basil, are simply placed at the edge of the slit. To transplant one of your seedlings, wait until its first two leaves are fully open, part the slit and slide the stem in as far as the base of those leaves: the plug closes around it and supports it without crushing it.

The seedling

The seed slides into the slot. Medium and large seeds, from tomato to bean, sit in it without rolling.

Transplanting

A seedling raised in a tray is pinched by the stem into the slit. Its fine roots stay protected while it settles in.

The cutting

A stem cut just below a node stands upright in the slot, with the damp plug around the cut.

3.7 cm cells for each plug

A 31 mm bung fits into each cell of the small germination kits, whose 12 cells of 3.7 cm sit in a watertight base under a lid with adjustable ventilation. The humid air under the lid limits the water a cutting loses through its leaves until it has roots, and you open the vent gradually as it takes root. The tweezers and scissors supplied with the kit are also handy for preparing your stems.

✂️ The cutting in the slot

For a cutting, take a soft stem of 5 to 10 cm just below a node, remove the lower leaves, then slide the base to the bottom of the slit, which closes up and holds it upright. The hormones that trigger root formation are concentrated at the node, and the damp plug surrounds your cutting without waterlogging it. Then place your tray in bright light but out of direct sun, ideally above bottom heat of 18 to 24 °C: most soft cuttings then root in 2 to 4 weeks, and their white roots eventually emerge from the plug.

The waterlogged root ball

A waterlogged plug deprives the seed and the stem of air and makes them rot. Keep the plug damp without letting it drip: drain it well before sowing or transplanting, and tip out any water that collects at the bottom of the tray.

🐟 From the tray to the aquaponic bed

Each plug also fits into a 105 or 128 tray cell, which lets you start an entire batch on a windowsill. Once the roots have emerged from the plug, place it in a net pot on your aquaponic bed. Coconut coir, one of the common grow media in aquaponics, carries no soil and does not cloud the fish water. The roots of your seedlings keep growing towards the water through the slits of the pot, and the plug stays around the stem base until harvest.
