Nitro is a liquid fertiliser from Easy Life that supplies nitrogen in the form of nitrate to aquarium plants, with no phosphate. It corrects nitrate deficiency in heavily planted, lightly stocked tanks.
10 ml per 500 litres raises the nitrate by 2 mg/L, in 250 or 500 ml bottles.
The summary
- Which bottle: 250 ml treats 12,500 L, 500 ml treats 25,000.
- What it provides: nitrate and a little potassium, with no phosphate.
- How to dose it: 10 ml per 500 L adds 2 mg/L of nitrate.
- What value to aim for: 10 to 20 mg/L in a planted aquarium.
Giving back to the plants the nitrogen the fish no longer supply in sufficient amounts
Nitro, the Easy Life liquid fertiliser, supplies nitrogen in the form of nitrate, with a little potassium and no phosphate, to aquarium plants. It suits heavily planted, lightly stocked tanks where nitrate is lacking. Dosed at 10 ml per 500 litres, it adds 2 mg/L of nitrate, aiming for 10 to 20 mg/L.
In an aquarium, nitrogen normally comes from the fish: their waste and uneaten food are converted into nitrate, which the plants then absorb. This cycle works as long as the fish are numerous and the plants modest. In a heavily planted, brightly lit and sparsely stocked tank, it is no longer enough, because the plants use up all the available nitrate. Nitro restores this supply without phosphate, which allows you to adjust nitrogen independently of the other nutrients.
Heavily planted tank
Plants absorb more nitrate than the fish produce.
Few fish
A tank of plants or shrimp receives little nitrogen.
Powerful lighting
Fast growth speeds up consumption.
Zero test
A nitrate level that is undetectable in the test indicates a deficiency.
🍃 Recognising a nitrogen deficiency
Nitrogen is used to make proteins and chlorophyll. As it is mobile within the plant, it is drawn from the oldest leaves to feed the new growth when it runs short: the old leaves turn pale and then yellow uniformly, starting at the bottom of the stems, and growth slows. Red plants sometimes lose their colour. These signs resemble other deficiencies, and a nitrate test saves you from correcting an element that is not actually lacking.
In a planted aquarium, a nitrate level of 10 to 20 mg/L is commonly aimed for. Below 5 mg/L, fast-growing plants show the first signs of deficiency; above 30 mg/L, the extra is of no use to them and the water becomes needlessly loaded. Nitro should therefore not be used blindly: it fills the gap between what your test shows and the target value.
The phosphate test to keep things balanced
Plants absorb nitrogen and phosphorus in a fairly constant ratio, so adding nitrate only has an effect if phosphate is not lacking. The drop-based phosphate test tells you which of the two is limiting growth in your tank. Zero nitrate with phosphate present also encourages cyanobacteria, which this double check lets you anticipate.
💧 Calculate the dose
According to the manufacturer, 10 ml in 500 litres raises nitrate by about 2 mg/L and potassium by 1.3 mg/L, which is about 2 mg/L of nitrate for 1 ml in 50 litres. In a 200-litre aquarium that reads 4 mg/L on the test, you need to add 8 mg/L to reach 12 mg/L, so about 16 ml. Pour the dose near the filter outlet, then repeat the test the following week to adjust. Over time, you will learn how much your tank consumes and the dose will become almost fixed.
The 250 ml bottle treats 12,500 litres at the reference dose, and the 500 ml bottle treats 25,000. For a 100-litre tank that needs 6 ml per week, the small bottle lasts about 10 months. The potassium supplied at the same time complements, without replacing, a potassium fertiliser such as Kalium when the potassium test calls for it.
Keep the bottle tightly closed, away from heat and out of the reach of children, and shake it before use. If the nitrate level exceeds the target value, simply stop adding it: your plants will bring it down within a few days, and a partial water change speeds up the return to the desired range. Record every measurement and every dose, as this log makes the next correction quicker.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, nitrate almost always comes from the fish, and that is indeed the principle of the system: nitrification turns their waste into fertiliser for the crops, as explained in the article on the nitrogen cycle in aquaponics. Adding nitrate is therefore only worthwhile in a young, lightly stocked or heavily planted system, where the test stays consistently below 5 mg/L. A small weekly dose then supports your plants while the fish grow. For a large production system, a powdered fertiliser becomes more economical; for an aquaponic aquarium or a small indoor system, the bottle dosed by the millilitre remains the most practical.
