Mycotrex is a Biotabs inoculant that combines spores of nine species of mycorrhizae, rhizosphere bacteria, seaweed meal and humic acid. Applied at 5 g in the planting hole, it establishes fungi around the roots that extend their reach through the compost or coco fibre.
The summary
- Fungi provided: nine species of endomycorrhizae, with bacteria, seaweed meal and humic acid.
- Single dose: 5 g in the planting hole, in direct contact with the roots.
- Timing: once, when transplanting seedlings or planting out.
- How many plants: around twenty with 100 g, around a hundred with 500 g.
Fungi that are allies of the roots, placed at the bottom of the planting hole
Biotabs' Mycotrex is a powdered inoculant of nine species of endomycorrhizae, with bacteria, algae and humic acid. You place 5 g at the bottom of the planting hole, once, after amending the potting mix with Startrex. The 100 g pot inoculates about twenty plants, the 500 g one about a hundred, never in a pond.
Mycorrhizae are microscopic fungi that live in association with the roots of most vegetables. Their filaments enter the root on one side and spread through the soil on the other, well beyond the zone the root hairs reach on their own. They bring the plant water, phosphorus and trace elements, and receive in exchange a share of the sugars it makes. Bagged compost contains none: Mycotrex supplies them, in a single pinch placed at planting time.
🍄 Nine species in one powder
The inoculant combines spores of nine species of endomycorrhizae, the family that associates with vegetables, herbs and fruit trees, including Glomus intraradices and Glomus mosseae. It pairs them with rhizosphere bacteria, seaweed meal and humic acid. When dry, these micro-organisms stay dormant and only activate on contact with water, which is why the powder is placed in the planting hole, at a rate of 5 g per plant, where the roots and watering will reach it immediately. It suits potting compost as well as coco fibre, in pots or in the open ground.
Dig
Open up the planting hole to the size of the root ball.
Sprinkle
Place 5 g of Mycotrex on the bottom and along the sides.
Plant
Place the root ball in contact with the powder, then water.
No fungicide around inoculated roots
Mycorrhizae are fungi: a fungicide applied to the soil shortly after planting destroys them. A heavy dose of soluble phosphorus also slows their establishment, so a gentle fertiliser suits them better than a highly concentrated flowering formula. Store the powder somewhere dry and cool, with the sachet or tub tightly closed, out of the reach of children.
🌱 In aquaponics, in the neighbouring vegetable garden
Mycorrhizae establish themselves in an aerated soil or potting compost, and Mycotrex is formulated for these growing media: its seaweed meal, humic acid and bacteria have no place in water shared with fish. It should therefore not be poured into the circuit, nor into a bed of clay pebbles. It is for use around your system: when transplanting tomatoes, courgettes or strawberry plants destined for the vegetable patch or for pots in the greenhouse, and in the compost-filled growing beds that complement an aquaponic installation. These beds can, incidentally, be watered with water taken from the pond, which supplies them with nitrogen in the form of nitrates. The article which fertiliser to use in aquaponics sets out which inputs are acceptable in the fish water and which are kept for pots.
An airy coco fibre to welcome mycorrhizae
Mycorrhizal filaments need air around the roots to colonise the growing medium. The 50 L coco fibre, natural or with perlite, retains water while staying airy, and the perlite version drains more freely for pots that are watered often. Plant your tomatoes or peppers in it with 5 g of Mycotrex at the bottom of the hole: from the very first watering, the fungi find a suitable environment, with no concentrated fertiliser to hinder their establishment.
🪴 At repotting and in large pots
The dose of 5 g per plant does not change with the size of the container, and it stays the same for a pot of 8.5 L, 15 L or 25 L, since the powder works on contact with the roots and not throughout the whole volume. When repotting, you place 5 g again in the new hole, in contact with the root ball, so that the roots spreading into the fresh compost find fungi there. One application is then enough for the whole crop, because mycorrhizae develop alongside the roots rather than running out.
🧩 The crops that benefit from it
Most fruiting vegetables and herbs form this association, starting with tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, strawberries, basil and leeks. Cabbages, radishes and other brassicas are the exception: they form little or no association with mycorrhizae, and the inoculant does nothing for them. So keep your pinches for long-season crops that stay in place for several months, where the network of filaments has time to develop. The guide to growing tomatoes details how to care for these plants from transplanting to harvest.
Mycotrex is the second step of a three-stage organic programme: the potting compost first receives the Startrex organic soil improver, the planting hole then receives Mycotrex, and the first watering finally supplies a solution of Bactrex bacteria and Trichoderma, at 1 g per litre of water. You can also use it on its own, with the fertiliser of your choice, provided you stick to gentle feeds during the first few weeks, such as Orgatrex liquid organic fertiliser at 5 ml per litre. Reused potting compost is re-inoculated at each new planting in the same way.
At 5 g per planting hole, the 100 g size is enough for around twenty plants, which is a season's vegetable garden, and the 500 g size for around a hundred, enough to equip an entire greenhouse or a plant nursery. Reseal the pack carefully after each use: as long as it stays dry, the powder keeps from one season to the next, its micro-organisms lying dormant until the next planting.
