Pre-pierced peat plugs for 32 mm baskets, to be transplanted whole
A pod is a compressed peat plug with a hole at the top. You place the seed inside, allow it to germinate, then drop the entire plug into your grow basket. There is no repotting and no root disturbance, which solves at a stroke the main difficulty of transplanting in soilless growing.
💦 Soaking, in 3 minutes
The pod arrives dry and measures 60 by 19 mm at that point. Three to five minutes in clean water is all it needs: it swells to roughly 70 by 23.5 mm and takes on a uniform dark colour, which tells you it is ready. Beyond 30 minutes the plug becomes saturated and the seed suffocates before it can germinate. You then place one or two seeds in the central hole, and leave those that germinate in light, such as lettuce and basil, uncovered.

The entire plug is planted as one, without ever having been opened.
That is the whole point of this shape, whose expanded diameter fits 32 mm baskets. Once the roots protrude from the plug, after 5 to 10 days, you push the entire pod into the basket and place it in the circuit. In aquaponics, this avoids introducing any growing compost into the water, since no fine particles travel towards the strainer and the biofilter receives no additional organic load. What takes over from the seed
A few days after germination, the seed's own reserves are exhausted, and the complete fertiliser then takes over to feed the young plant. If you are sowing large numbers at once, a cell tray keeps your pods together during germination and saves you from handling them one by one. Allow one pod per position on your support, plus a margin, as not all seeds will germinate.
The dry pod and the submerged pod
Sowing in a pod that has been left dry yields nothing, as the seed waits for moisture that never reaches the centre of the plug. Conversely, a pod left in water for half an hour too long becomes saturated and suffocates the seed. Once germination has occurred, never separate the pod from the root plug, as keeping it intact is what prevents transplanting shock and preserves the finest root hairs.
🌡️ Where to germinate
Swollen pods are generally placed in a cell tray under a propagator dome until germination. Temperature matters more than light at this stage: most spring vegetables require between 18 and 24 °C at grow medium level, and a room at 15 °C can easily double germination times. Light becomes essential, however, as soon as the shoot emerges, without it, the seedling will etiolate and be lost. Space the pods slightly rather than packing them together, as a wet peat plug pressed against its neighbour dries out poorly and develops a white surface mould.
♻️ What becomes of the plug
The compressed peat does not break down into the system; it stays in place around the roots throughout the growing period and is removed along with the plant at harvest. With a long-term crop such as a tomato, the plug gradually falls apart and loses its shape, though this causes no problem as the roots will have long since taken over. At the end of the cycle, the whole thing goes into the compost, plug and roots alike, where the peat breaks down like any other organic matter. Any net or mesh around the pod, if it has one, should however be removed before composting.
