Artemia eggs, salt and nauplii food, JBL Artemio range
JBL's Artemio range covers the hatching and rearing of brine shrimp: ArtemioMix (eggs and salt), ArtemioPur (eggs only), ArtemioSal (salt with microalgae) and ArtemioFluid, a liquid phytoplankton for feeding the nauplii.
The summary
- Which product: eggs and salt, eggs only, salt or phytoplankton.
- Hatching: in 24 to 36 h, with light and aeration.
- ArtemioMix: 3 spoonfuls for 0.5 L, around 14 cultures.
- ArtemioFluid: to feed the nauplii and help them grow.
Hatching, then growing on your brine shrimp
Brine shrimp (artemia) are small saltwater crustaceans whose dry eggs, known as cysts, keep for a long time and hatch in 24 to 36 hours. The larvae that emerge, the nauplii, are live prey just the right size for the mouths of fry. With a little more care, you can also keep them and grow them on for a few days, to feed young fish that are already larger. The Artemio range follows these two stages: hatching the eggs, then feeding the young brine shrimp.
🧂 Four products, two steps
For hatching, ArtemioMix brings together the eggs, the salt and microalgae in a single tub: 3 spoonfuls of 5 ml in half a litre of tap water are enough, and the tub is good for about 14 cultures. ArtemioPur contains eggs only, packed under nitrogen to keep better, and is used with ArtemioSal, the hatching salt enriched with microalgae, a tub of which makes up about 7 litres of salt water. For rearing, ArtemioFluid is an ultra-fine liquid phytoplankton, with 37% protein, which the young brine shrimp filter from the water. If you are just starting out, ArtemioMix saves you from having to measure out any salt.
Getting started simply
ArtemioMix already contains the eggs and the salt.
Dose it yourself
ArtemioPur and ArtemioSal can be combined as you wish.
Growing on the nauplii
ArtemioFluid feeds young brine shrimp.
Keeping it for a long time
The ArtemioPur eggs are packed under nitrogen.
A small air pump for hatching
The eggs only hatch well if they are kept moving in strongly aerated water. The Aquael Oxyboost Plus AP-100 air pump, with its 100 L/h on a single outlet, is enough to stir a container of half a litre to one litre. You therefore get more nauplii per culture, as the eggs no longer settle on the bottom.
Rinse the nauplii in fresh water before feeding them
The hatching water contains 2 to 3% salt, along with the empty egg shells, which are indigestible. Pour the harvest into a fine sieve and rinse it in fresh water before feeding it to the fry, rather than tipping the salty water into your aquarium. A pipette then lets you measure out small quantities, several times a day.
🍼 Hatching, feeding, harvesting
Hatching needs light, strong aeration and water at around 25 °C. With ArtemioPur, use 1 to 3 spoonfuls of eggs for half a litre of salt water at 2 or 3%, that is 10 to 15 g of salt. Between 25 and 28 °C, most of the eggs hatch in about 24 hours, whereas cooler water lengthens the delay and reduces the number of nauplii obtained; a small aquarium heater placed in a water bath solves this easily.
Artemia swim towards the light, which makes harvesting easier. Switch off the aeration for a few minutes and light one side of the container with a torch: the nauplii gather there, while the empty shells float at the surface and the unhatched eggs sink to the bottom. Then draw them off with a pipette, or pour the lit area through a sieve. For a regular supply, start two cultures in rotation, one day apart, so that one can be harvested while the other hatches. A transparent container, a small air pump and a pipe are enough to get started.
Just after hatching, the nauplii live off their reserves. To keep them a few days longer and help them grow, add ArtemioFluid drop by drop until the water takes on a slight green tint, then add more when it becomes clear again. Artemia not consumed on the same day keep for a few hours in the refrigerator, in a little salt water, but their nutritional value drops markedly after 24 hours. ArtemioPur eggs keep for 1 year in their sealed tin, then for about 4 months after opening, provided you close it properly after each use.
🌱 In aquaponics
In an aquaponic system, breeding the fish makes it possible to renew the stock without buying more. Freshly hatched brine shrimp give tilapia fry, like guppy fry in a small indoor tank, a live food during the first weeks, when dry foods are still too large for them. The guide to raising tilapia in aquaponics details how to keep this species, and the one on choosing fish for aquaponics presents the small species suited to reduced volumes.
