IP65 pH meter with replaceable electrode, pH and temperature
The Milwaukee pH55 measures the pH and temperature of the water in a tank, a pond or a nutrient solution, to a tenth of a unit. Its IP65 casing withstands water splashes, temperature compensation corrects the reading, and the electrode can be replaced when it wears out.
The summary
- In the box: the tester, its fitted electrode, its cap, 4 batteries and 2 sachets of buffer solution.
- What it measures: pH to one decimal place and temperature, displayed together.
- Calibration: automatic, in one or two points, using buffer solutions.
- Service life: the Mi56P electrode can be replaced when it wears out.
- Aquaponic guideline: a pH kept between 6.4 and 7.5 in the fish water, checked every week.
- IP65 rating: protected against dust and water jets, but not against prolonged immersion.
Waterproof pH and temperature tester, whose electrode can be replaced without buying a new device
The Milwaukee pH55 pH meter measures pH from -2.0 to 16.0 to a tenth, accurate to ±0.1, plus temperature, with automatic compensation and one- or two-point calibration. Its Mi56P double-junction electrode is replaceable. Test the fish water in a cup: the IP65 case withstands splashes, not immersion.
An electronic pH tester wears out through its electrode, the small glass probe that goes into the water. On most entry-level pens it is soldered to the casing, and the whole device goes in the bin when it weakens. The Milwaukee pH55 does things differently: its electrode, referenced Mi56P, slides into the casing and then screws in, so you replace it when it ages and the waterproof casing keeps on serving.
This electrode is double-junction and gel-filled. The junction is the small passage through which the probe's internal electrolyte meets the water being measured; doubling it protects the reference from the ions in the sample, which slows its ageing and keeps readings fast. The gel, for its part, removes any need to refill the electrolyte. Even so, every pH probe has a limited lifespan, and its response time lengthens with age: that is the sign that a new electrode is needed.
💧 What the screen displays
The display shows the pH at the same time, to a tenth of a unit with an accuracy of ±0.1, and the temperature, from -5 to 60 °C to within ±0.5 °C. Automatic temperature compensation corrects the pH reading according to the warmth of the water, which makes a morning reading and an afternoon reading comparable. The measuring range extends from -2.0 to 16.0, far beyond anything a growing water will reach. The casing is rated IP65, which means it lets in neither dust nor jets of water, without being designed for prolonged immersion. The device weighs around a hundred grams and switches itself off after 8 minutes of inactivity, which spares its batteries.
🐟 Monitoring the pH of an aquaponic system
In aquaponics, pH is a compromise between three populations: the fish, the nitrifying bacteria and the plants. The compromise sits between 6.4 and 7.5, a range that all three populations tolerate together. Nitrifying bacteria work best above 7.5 and almost stop below 6, whereas plants absorb iron and phosphorus better in slightly acidic water. Nitrification itself produces acidity, so your pH drops week after week. The guide regulating pH in aquaponics sets out the corrections in detail.
Buffer solutions and a storage solution in a single bottle
The pH55 is calibrated at one or two points and stored with the electrode kept wet. The pH and EC calibration and probe maintenance solution brings together the buffers for calibration and the storage liquid to pour into the cap. Calibrate with the pH 7 buffer and then the pH 4 buffer at least once a month, and after every cleaning or electrode change, so you can be sure the tenth shown on the display remains accurate.
Never use osmosis or distilled water in the cap
Store the electrode upright, with the cap filled with storage solution. Failing that, tap water will do for a few hours, but distilled water and reverse-osmosis water damage the probe's sensitivity, and an electrode left dry loses its responsiveness and gives drifting readings.
🧪 Measure, calibrate, clean
Automatic calibration
In one or two points, the device automatically recognises the pH 4.01, 7.01 and 10.01 buffers.
Button batteries
Four LR44 batteries included, for about 300 hours of measurement.
Mi56P electrode
Double-junction, it slides into the housing and then screws in.
Cleaning
Soak for about twenty minutes in cleaning solution, then calibrate.
To take a measurement, immerse the electrode in the sample, stir gently to speed up the response, wait for the stability symbol, then hold the reading on the screen. It is best to draw the water into a clean cup rather than measure directly in the tank, which avoids dropping the meter in and lets you note the value in peace. The meter stores two sets of buffers in its memory, 4.01, 7.01 and 10.01 or 4.01, 6.86 and 9.18, depending on the solutions you use. Clean the electrode regularly by soaking it in a cleaning solution, then calibrate again, because cleaning slightly alters the probe's response.
📉 Reading a trend rather than a single figure
A single reading says little, whereas a series taken at the same time of day shows the trend. Note your values in a notebook: a steady drop from one week to the next signals nitrification consuming the alkalinity, and gives you time to correct before reaching the threshold where the bacteria slow down. The FAO manual recommends taking this reading every week, before the fish are fed, and it is worth doing more often during start-up. To raise the pH towards 7, the usual practice is to alternate calcium hydroxide and potassium hydroxide, which supply calcium and potassium to the plants at the same time. Conversely, a pH that stays too high locks out iron, and this is often what explains young leaves turning yellow, as the article on iron deficiency in aquaponics explains.
🌿 In hydroponics and in the pond
The same device is used in hydroponics, where the pH is set below the aquaponics range since no fish or biofilter imposes a compromise. The feeding charts for coir fertilisers, for example, aim for a pH of 5.8 to 6.5. Check the solution after each addition of fertiliser and after each correction, because a mineral fertiliser and a corrector both alter the pH, then let the solution circulate for a few minutes before measuring again. At the edge of a garden pond, the pH55 tracks how the water changes through the seasons, and its temperature compensation makes summer and winter readings comparable.
The pH55 does not measure conductivity, which is read with a separate conductivity tester; together, the two devices cover the two basic measurements of a nutrient solution. The tester comes with its Mi56P electrode already fitted, its protective cap, four LR44 batteries and two 20 ml sachets of pH 4.01 and pH 7.01 buffer solutions, enough to carry out the first calibration straight out of the box. Pour a few drops of storage solution into the cap before first use, then store your device upright, away from frost and direct sunlight, so that the electrode stays responsive from one season to the next.
