JBL ProFlow water pump for aquariums and aquaponics, 300 to 2,000 L/h
JBL ProFlow pumps circulate the water in an aquarium, a filter or a small aquaponics system. The t models are compact and sit in the water; the u models work submerged or out of the water, connected by a pipe.
The five models deliver from 300 to 2,000 L/h and all carry a 4-year guarantee.
The summary
- Which model: from 300 to 2,000 L/h, depending on the volume to be circulated.
- Two families: t submersible and compact, u in or out of the water.
- The height: from 0.50 m for the t300 to 2 m for the u2000.
- Power consumption: from 4 W to 35 W depending on the model.
From a small water lift to a filter return, the pump in the right size
The JBL ProFlow pumps circulate the water of an aquarium, a filter or a small aquaponics system, with five models from 300 to 2,000 L/h. The t300 and t500 are compact and submersible, while the u800, u1100 and u2000 work in or out of the water. The maximum head ranges from 0.50 m to 2 m, for 4 to 35 W.
In an aquarium, as in an aquaponics system, the water must circulate constantly: it leaves the fish tank, passes through the filter, is lifted to the plants and then drains back down by gravity. It is the pump that provides this movement, and its size matters, because a pump that is too weak lets the water stagnate, while a pump that is too powerful wastes energy and buffets your fish. The JBL ProFlow range covers this span with five models, from 300 to 2,000 litres per hour, split into two families that are not installed in the same way.
💧 Two families, two uses
The ProFlow t300 and t500 are small submersible pumps barely 6 cm across. They suit tight spaces, such as the clear-water compartment of a biological filter, a small grow bed, an indoor fountain or an aqua-terrarium, as they run with just 4 cm of water above them. A hook on the back guides the cable upwards or sideways depending on the space available, and their strainer acts as a pre-filter, stopping debris from reaching the impeller.
The ProFlow u800, u1100 and u2000 are universal pumps. They work submerged with their strainer, or outside the tank, connected by a suction pipe that replaces the strainer. Fitting the pump out of the water keeps your tank uncluttered and makes maintenance easier. The shaft of their impeller is supported at both ends, which reduces vibration and wear. The u2000, the most powerful, has adjustable flow and serves as the return pump for a biological filter or a medium-sized aquaponics system.
t300 and t500
They deliver 300 and 500 L/h, submerged, at 4 and 5 W.
u800 and u1100
They deliver 900 and 1,200 L/h, in or out of the water, for 7 and 12 W.
u2000
It delivers up to 2,000 L/h, adjustable, submerged or out of the water, for 35 W.
All
They are suitable for freshwater and seawater alike, with a 4-year guarantee.
The stated flow rate corresponds to a pump that moves water without lifting it. As soon as the water has to rise to a height, the flow drops, then falls to zero at the pump's maximum head: 0.50 m for the t300, 0.80 m for the t500, 0.95 m for the u800, 1.30 m for the u1100 and 2 m for the u2000. As a rule of thumb, a pump lifting water to half its maximum head delivers about half its nominal flow rate. Bends and a pipe that is too narrow or too long also slow the water, so it is worth keeping your run as short and as straight as possible.
A double tap to take the pump out without emptying the circuit
The JBL double tap with quick-release fitting, in 12/16 or 16/22 mm, fits onto the delivery pipe. It shuts off the water on both sides, then comes apart by hand, so you can take the pump out to clean it without draining the pipe. It is also used to reduce the flow of a t500, a u800 or a u1100, which cannot adjust themselves.
A pump must never run dry
The water cools the pump and lubricates the shaft of its impeller, and a few minutes of dry running are enough to damage it. If a pump has been placed out of the water, it should be filled with water along with its suction pipe before being switched on. Always keep enough water in the tank so that the strainer or intake stays submerged, even after a week's evaporation.
📐 Choosing by height
In a small indoor aquaponics system, with a 200-litre fish tank and a grow bed set 50 cm above the water, the usual rule is that the tank's volume should pass through the bed at least once an hour, that is, 200 L/h at the inlet. The u800, whose maximum head reaches 0.95 m, still delivers around 400 L/h at 50 cm: it is sufficient, with a margin for clogging. If your bed is positioned at a height of one metre, choose the u1100 or the u2000 instead, since the u800, limited to 0.95 m, would no longer lift the water that far.
🧽 Maintenance and connection
Maintenance comes down to rinsing the strainer as soon as the flow drops and cleaning the impeller from time to time, as limescale and biofilm eventually slow it down. Remove the chamber cover, take out the impeller, brush it under water from the tank, then refit it. Connect a flexible pipe of 12/16 mm to the t300 and t500, of 16/22 mm to the outlet of the u800 and u1100, and of 19/25 mm to the outlet of the u2000, making sure your pipe pushes all the way home to the stop.
🌱 In aquaponics
In aquaponics, your pump runs day and night, and its consumption adds up over time: the u800 uses only 7 W for 900 L/h, and the u1100 12 W for 1,200 L/h, or about 105 kWh a year when running continuously. In an ebb-and-flow system, where a siphon empties the grow bed at regular intervals, the pump must deliver a solid flow to fill the bed before the siphon triggers. The guide to building your own aquaponic system shows how to organise the circuit around the pump.
