The summary

Adjusting and splitting the air from one pump between several diffusers

As soon as your air pump has to supply a second diffuser, its output has to be shared. The Amtra T and Y fittings split the pipe into 2 branches, and the metal valve is then placed on one of them to adjust its flow, so that each diffuser gets its share. All of them fit the standard 4/6 mm air pipe, simply by pushing it onto the nozzles.

🫧 Building an air circuit

Cut the pipe at the point where you want to split it, push each end onto the fitting, then add a valve on the shorter branch, the one that receives the most air. Switch the pump on and gradually close the valve until the bubbles are even. The T and the Y do the same job, but their shape changes the routing of the pipes: the Y spreads the 2 branches in the same direction, whereas the T sends them out to either side of the inlet.

A single non-return valve before the split

An Amtra non-return valve placed before the fitting protects all the branches at once when the pump stops. It stops the water in the tanks from flowing back towards the pump by siphoning, which would damage its diaphragm. So you only need one valve per pump, however many fittings you add afterwards.

Keep the fittings above the water level, where they stay dry and accessible. Run the pipe along the cabinet and secure it with a few clip suckers, then place the fitting and the valve at hand height, above the tank, so that an adjustment requires neither plunging your hands into the water nor moving the cabinet. Cut the pipe to the right length: any excess left dangling ends up kinking and restricting the air.

🔧 Balancing several diffusers

Air always takes the path of least resistance. If your two diffusers share a single fitting, the one that is shallower, or cleaner, receives the larger share, and the other may end up producing no bubbles at all. That is why a valve almost always goes with a fitting: it restricts the branch that is getting too much and sends the air back to the other. Its metal dial then holds its setting, even when you move the pipes around for maintenance.

An example: an air pump with two outlets has to supply three diffusers, one in the fish tank and two in a grow bed. The first outlet goes directly to the fish tank. The second goes through a Y fitting, then each branch of the Y feeds a diffuser, and a valve on the shorter branch evens out their bubbles. You will therefore need here a pack of Y fittings, a valve and about 2 metres of extra pipe.

When the bubbles suddenly weaken, look for the leak along the circuit. A drop of soapy water placed on each fitting will foam where air is escaping, and a poorly seated end piece often hisses audibly. A pipe that has hardened over the years loses its grip: replace it rather than adding clips. The pack of 2 fittings leaves you with a spare.

Two diffusers

A T or a Y splits the air, and a valve balances the two branches.

Flow too strong

A tap fitted on its own on the pipe restricts the flow.

Three diffusers

Two fittings placed one after the other give three branches.

Spare

The pack of two keeps a fitting in reserve.

🌱 In aquaponics

In your system, a single pump often aerates both the fish tank and a deep water culture grow bed, where the roots are permanently submerged and depend on the dissolved oxygen that the bubbles provide. A Y-connector and a valve are enough to adjust each tank, and when a diffuser becomes clogged, opening the valve a notch rebalances the aeration. The guide to maintaining your aquaponic system in summer explains why aeration needs to be stepped up when the water warms.
