The summary

Square pocket scale, to the hundredth for small doses or to the tenth for feed portions

The Pure Scale Tyson series II pocket scale, with its 9.4 cm square case, comes in a 100 g model accurate to 0.01 g and a 500 g model accurate to 0.1 g. Its retractable display and removable lid protect it. The 0.01 g version measures out chelates and trace elements, while the 0.1 g version weighs the fish ration.

The weighings in your growing system fall into two families. Small doses, such as an iron chelate or a trace element for a few litres, are measured to the hundredth of a gram. Everyday doses, such as the day's feed ration, Epsom salt or bicarbonate, need only the tenth. The Tyson scale from the Pure Scale range, made by The Pure Factory, exists for each, in the same square housing measuring 9.4 cm.

🔍 A screen that stows away

The II series stands out for its retractable display: it folds out for reading and folds back afterwards, protected from knocks. The removable lid covers the stainless steel platform during storage. The backlit display can be read in a dark corner, the tare function zeroes out the weight of a cup, and an overload protection safeguards the sensor. The gram, ounce, carat and grain are among its units.

100 g x 0.01 g

For a chelate, a trace element or a pinch of fine seeds.

500 g x 0.1 g

For the fish ration, mineral salts and powdered fertilisers.

🎯 Checking accuracy

A pocket scale leaves the factory calibrated, but transport, a knock or a cold room is enough to shift its reading. Place the 100 g check weight on the empty platform of your scale: the 100 g version should display 100.00 g and the 500 g version 100.0 g. A discrepancy that grows from one week to the next means you need to run the calibration again, with the mass the instructions call for on your version. On the small version, this weight takes up the whole range and therefore also serves as a reference at the top of the scale.

🧪 Dosing iron in a small sump tank

The DTPA chelated iron is dosed at around 18 g per 1,000 L, which is 0.18 g for a 10 L bucket. This dose corresponds to the 2 mg of iron per litre that New Mexico State University advises adding every three weeks in aquaponics. The hundredth-of-a-gram version displays this quantity, provided you let the screen settle away from any draught. That hundredth is only a display resolution: it is the check with a known weight that tells you whether the displayed dose really is the weighed dose. In aquaponics, this iron supplements what the fish provide when the young leaves turn yellow between the veins.

A stock solution for tiny doses

Weigh out 1.8 g of chelated iron into 1 litre of water and draw off 100 ml per 10 L bucket. The weighing is done on a quantity ten times larger, and each bucket receives the same dose.

The capacity includes the container

With the 100 g version, a 30 g cup leaves only 70 g for the product. Choose a light container, or switch to the 500 g version for heavier quantities.

🐟 The fish ration

The one-tenth version has its place next to your pond. The FAO sets the ration at 1 to 2% of the fish's body weight per day above 50 g, and at about 1% above 100 g, and links it to the growing area: 40 to 50 g of feed per square metre per day for leafy vegetables, 50 to 80 g for fruiting vegetables. In its example, a 500 L tank stocked with 10 kg of fish receives 100 g of feed per day and supports 2 m² of crops. Weighed out each day, this ration keeps the balance between what the fish excrete and what the plants absorb, and avoids wasted feed that decomposes at the bottom of the tank. For your small living-room system, the one-hundredth version weighs both the few grams of feed for a handful of fish and the pinch of iron.
