Pipe cleaning brush Ø 16 mm, length 30 cm
This bottle brush, also known as a pipe brush, has a 16 mm diameter brush head 80 mm long, mounted on a 30 cm stem with a loop handle. It cleans the inside of flexible pipes, fittings and sight-gauge tubes.
It removes biofilm and deposits that reduce flow rates in hydroponic or aquaponic systems.
The summary
- What you receive: a 30 cm brush with a 16 mm diameter head over 80 mm.
- The pipes: approximately 14 to 18 mm internal diameter, such as 14 x 18 mm crystal pipe.
- When to use it: between crops, or as soon as flow rate drops in a pipe.
- The loop: a 10 mm ring for pulling the brush through or hanging it up.
Long brush for cleaning the inside of pipes, fittings and level tubes
Inside a pipe carrying a nutrient solution, a biofilm gradually builds up, made up of bacteria, algae, and salts. It reduces the effective bore, restricts flow, and harbours unwanted micro-organisms. This tube brush removes it mechanically, with a 16 mm diameter, 80 mm long brush fitted to the end of a 30 cm rod. You insert it into the pipe, rotate it as you push it forward, and the deposit breaks away from the wall.
Its 16 mm brush suits pipes with an internal diameter of approximately 14 to 18 mm, covering the 14 x 18 mm crystal-clear flexible pipe, the 18 x 22 mm black pipe, and level tubes. In a narrower pipe the brush will bind, and in a wider one it will no longer scrub the wall. Please check the internal diameter of your pipes before ordering.
🧽 The cleaning action
Disconnect the pump, detach the pipe to be cleaned, then rinse it to flush out any remaining solution. Insert the brush whilst rotating it, working from one end to the other, with several back-and-forth passes. As the brush is 30 cm long, a pipe can be scrubbed from both ends up to approximately 60 cm in length; beyond that, cut it into sections and reconnect them with fittings afterwards. Finally, rinse with clean water until it runs clear.
Flush the circuit after brushing
Brushing loosens the biofilm, but debris remains in the circuit. Run the pump afterwards with a rinsing solution in the reservoir, then empty it before preparing a fresh solution. The circuit then restarts clean, with no residue left to clog the drippers or spray nozzles.
In an opaque circuit, biofilm tends to go unnoticed, and it is usually a drop in flow rate that reveals it. A transparent pipe, on the other hand, will show a greenish or brownish film on its inner wall, a sign that light is promoting algae growth. In both cases, a brush clean between crops is generally sufficient, followed by a rinse of the reservoir.
Brushing without piercing the pipe
The stem is rigid and its tip can catch on a narrow or aged pipe. Push gently with a turning motion, and do not use it as a drain snake to clear a completely blocked pipe, one in that state is better replaced than forced through. Rinse the brush after use and leave it to dry, loop end up.
Take a 60 cm run of 14 x 18 mm crystal pipe between two reservoirs, turned green after a season of use. Disconnect it, brush it from one end and then the other, each pass covering 30 cm, and rinse until the water runs clear. The green film disappears, and the original flow rate is restored for the next crop. On a longer run, repeat the same process from each intermediate fitting, once the pipe has been dismantled at that point.
🔩 Fittings and small parts
Barbed fittings, elbows and tees accumulate deposits at changes of direction, where the water slows. On 16 mm fittings, the internal bore of the connectors is narrower than the brush, which cleans the entrance; it does, however, fit inside larger cavities, such as the inside of a pump pre-chamber or a level tube. This keeps your components clean so you can reassemble them without worrying about a deposit breaking free into the circuit.
🐟 In aquaponics
In a system with fish, the pipes also carry particles and waste matter, which cause fouling more quickly than in a hydroponic circuit. Brushing should be done with water from the system rather than with detergent, so as not to destroy the beneficial bacteria. A mechanical filter placed before the pump limits these deposits upstream. Rinse the brush under clean water afterwards and allow it to dry before storing, so it does not carry deposits from one circuit to another.
